Chapter 121

I stormed into Kaius’s office with Frost right behind me, fury and self-loathing burning through my veins. My fist slammed down on his
desk.
“God! I’m such an idiot!”
I hit it again. And again. Each impact harder than the last, my knuckles screaming in protest, my wrist threatening to snap.
Frost grabbed my hand mid-swing. “God, stop it! This isn’t the time for self-flagellation!” His tone was sharp, but his grip was gentle. “Kaius only has us now. Getting angry at yourself won’t help him!”
I stared into his pale blue eyes-warm, concerned, completely free of blame. Something in my chest loosened.
“You’re right,” I said, exhaling slowly. “I need to conserve my strength. Tonight. We’ll break him out of the dungeons tonight.”
Frost released my hand and sank into a chair, his expression thoughtful. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“What?” I gaped at him. “When else would we have a better chance?”
He shook his head. ‘Don’t you find it strange? You said you could see the future?”
The memory of those visions made my stomach twist. “I’m telling you the truth! Right before I shifted, I saw myself killing Kaius over and over. Wave after wave of images. I couldn’t focus on reality at all. Fuck…”
Frost nodded slowly. “In the cave-did you experience something similar?”
I froze. My mind raced back. “Fuck.” The word came out as a whisper. “Not just the cave. When Kaius was attacked by rogues in the forest -I had a premonition then too. I felt certain he was going to die.”
A strange smile crossed Frost’s face.
“Are you seriously smiling right now?” I demanded.
‘It means someone has been using magic to interfere with your thoughts. Your perception. Even your emotions.”
Ice shot through my veins. Fuck. If someone could constantly manipulate me like this, what good was my power? I’d be useless no matter how strong I became.
Frost stood, reading my expression perfectly. “There’s a witch using magic to create barriers around you. Preventing your transformation. Or worse-ensuring that when you do shift, you go berserk.” He moved closer, his voice dropping. “They can invade minds. Make you see

enemies where there are allies. Make you attack friends thinking they’re foes.”
“So that’s why I was terrified to shift!” I burst out. “At least Kaius wasn’t in immediate danger of death. But if I became the threat…” I
trailed off, horrified.
“Exactly,” Frost said quietly. “Until you can resist their magical interference, a rescue attempt will likely end the same way.”
“Witches. Magic. Fuck!” I kicked the chair leg. “Why can’t I resist this shit?”
“Their magic is probably specifically designed to target white wolves,” Frost offered. “I don’t believe ordinary magic could affect you this
severely.”
My face burned with shame at my own weakness.
Frost approached me, his hand hovering near my shoulder. “You’re too tense. You’ve had an exhausting day. Sit down and rest. I’ll bring you something to eat.” His voice softened. “And please-don’t do anything rash until we have a real plan.”
I wanted to argue, but exhaustion was dragging at my bones. I nodded mutely.
After Frost left, I threw my feet up on Kaius’s desk, still seething. Not just about Kaius being imprisoned-though that was infuriating enough-but about Rowan. That seductive snake, her hands all over him, her body pressed against his…
I forced myself to focus. Think. Find a solution.
Evelyn!
I reached out through our mental link. Evelyn! I’m at Kaius’s pack. I need help!
Her laughter echoed mockingly in my mind. God! I knew you ran off to see him! How convenient-you don’t call during the sweet times, but the moment there’s trouble, suddenly you remember your friends exist!
Fuck! I’m asking about something serious! I shot back. How’s the pack? Is Scarlett okay?
Oh, she’s wonderful, Evelyn said airily. Our dear blue-haired beta is happily lost in the fake prophecy I fed her!
WTF? You lied to her??
Well! she interrupted. You don’t want to see your best friend heartbroken, do you? Besides-do you want to hear the actual details of what I
told her?
Before I could respond, she continued: “She who runs with moonlight shall be courted by seven magnificent Alphas, each more handsome than the last, bearing gifts of eternal devotion and abs that could cut diamond-
Evelyn! Seriously?

She giggled. What? The prophecy gets better! “And in her wake, unmated she-wolves shall weep, for she has claimed all the good ones-
EVELYN! I nearly shouted through the link. Do you have any way to resist mental magic? The kind that creates false visions or manipulates emotions? Dark magic?
The playful tone vanished from her voice. God! I’m trying to gossip with you and you want to talk business??

“Tell me what you know or I swear I’ll make you regret it when I get back,” I threatened.
She laughed, but I heard the shift in her tone-she was taking me seriously now. Well! This type of dark magic-if you’re exposed long-term,
you might eventually build up resistance. But short-term? She paused dramatically.
“What?” I demanded. “Short-term what?”
Short-term, you need to find the crazy alchemist who lives in the Forbidden Sanctum. Her voice took on a darker edge. Lysandra. She’s brilliant, completely insane, and probably the only one who can brew something to shield your mind from witchcraft. But fair warning-
What?
She doesn’t take visitors kindly. Especially not desperate ones.
