Chapter 138

I didn’t release the blade immediately. Instead, I twisted it deeper, feeling the metal grind against bone and organ. There was something satisfying-darkly, viciously satisfying-about watching the light fade from Cross’s eyes.
This dagger killed my mate. Using it to kill this traitor feels… appropriate.
The black wolf turned his head, looking first at me, then at Frost’s injured form. His lips pulled back in a final snarl, revealing bloodied teeth-rage at being ambushed, fury at the unfairness of a duel interrupted.
“Surprised, Gamma?” I leaned closer, voice barely above a whisper. “Though you should recognize this tactic, shouldn’t you? Striking when
your opponent least expects it?”
I drove the blade straight through his heart with one savage thrust, then kicked his massive body away from me. The black wolf crashed
to the ground and didn’t move again.
Frost shifted back to human form, his body covered in cuts and bruises. He pulled on his discarded clothes with deliberate slowness, then
offered me a tired smile. “Didn’t think you’d show.”
“Didn’t think you’d survive without me.” I wiped the blade clean on Cross’s fur. “Not in your current state.”
Frost’s expression flickered with something like shame, but he didn’t deny it. “Still… would’ve preferred to finish him myself.”
I studied him carefully. His reaction to Cross’s betrayal had been extreme-far beyond normal beta loyalty. Every time something involved Elowen, Frost became unnaturally invested. It had started when I’d sent him to investigate her in the human world. Since then, his
dedication to her wellbeing had bordered on obsessive.
He loves her.
The realization hit me with surprising clarity. Not as a subject loves a queen, but as a man loves a woman.
Frost must have noticed me staring because he shifted uncomfortably, looking away.
“I know what you did for her.” My voice came out quieter than intended. “Challenging Cross to a death match because he hurt Elowen. I
have no right to call you reckless.” I gestured toward the castle. “Come on. Let’s-”
“My, my! What a delightful surprise!”
Fuck.
Rowan swept into the training grounds like she owned the place-which, technically, she partially did now. Her personal guards fanned

out behind her, hands on weapons.
Frost and I exchanged a glance. We’d just killed her spy, her attack dog, her-
Rowan looked down at Cross’s corpse. Her eyes went wide.
Then she smiled. “Oh, thank God. I was wondering how to dispose of him.”
I blinked. “What?”
“Did you two do this? How thoughtful!” She actually sounded delighted. “Saved me the trouble.”
“He was your-
“My pet.” Rowan examined her nails with theatrical disinterest. “And like any pet, he was useful… until he wasn’t.”
Frost was staring at her like she’d grown a second head.

“See, here’s the thing about transactions,” Rowan continued, circling the corpse with predatory grace. “I pay for services rendered. Gamma here?” She nudged Cross’s body with her foot. “I paid him handsomely. Enhanced potions. Women. Money. Power.” Her voice dropped to something cold and sharp. “But apparently, that wasn’t enough. He wanted Beta’s position. Then King. Then…” She laughed. “He actually
thought he could fuck me into giving him more.”
My blood ran cold at the implication.
“People who renegotiate closed deals…” Rowan’s eyes found mine with laser precision. “People who demand more than they’re owed…
Well.” She gestured at the corpse. “You’re looking at the result.”
Message received, you manipulative bitch.
Frost seemed to finally understand what kind of cage I was trapped in. His expression shifted from disgust to something uncomfortably
close to pity.
“Elder,” he said quickly, stepping forward. “Let me handle the cleanup. You should return to your chambers.”
Rowan’s attention snapped to him like a hawk spotting prey. She moved closer, her hands suddenly on his chest, trailing down his
abdomen with possessive familiarity.
“Such a gentleman, Beta.” Her fingers traced his waistline. “And such impressive… discipline.” She leaned in, her breath hot against his
ear. “We’re going to have so much fun together.”
Frost stood frozen, clearly revolted but too smart to pull away.
Then Rowan turned to me. Her hand dropped-bold, shameless-directly to my groin.

“Kaius. Her voice turned breathy, intimate. “Stop wasting time out here. Come back to bed.”
I saw Frost’s face out of the corner of my eye-shock morphing into contempt.
He thinks I’ve completely surrendered. That I’m her puppet.
Instead of pulling away, I pressed forward, letting Rowan feel exactly how her touch affected me-or rather, how unaffected I was. My body responded mechanically, without genuine desire, but she didn’t need to know that.

Rowan’s eyes widened, genuine surprise flickering across her face. A soft moan escaped her lips as she felt my hardness against her palm.
I leaned down until my mouth was next to her ear, my voice dropping to something dark and promising:
*Keep your end of our bargain, Rowan, and I’ll make you scream my name until dawn.” I let my breath ghost across her skin. “I’ll have you begging for mercy you’ll never receive. I’ll fuck you so thoroughly you’ll forget every other man who’s ever touched you.” I pulled back just enough to meet her eyes, holding her gaze. “But only if you give me what I want.”
For one crystalline moment, I saw her mask slip. The seductress recognizing a predator. The manipulator realizing her toy had teeth.
Then she smiled-wider, hungrier than before.
“God, Kaius. Her free hand came up to trace my jaw. “You really do know how to negotiate.” She pulled away slowly, reluctantly. “One hour. My chambers. Come and show me how you’ll make me scream. I want to feel you fuck my mouth, my throat… I want you to own every last inch of me until I’m nothing but a mess begging for you.”
