Chapter 175 They Are Asking for Trouble

Chapter 175 They Are Asking for Trouble

It took three days for the swelling on Natasha’s face to subside. She wore a mask to work, and thankfully, her coworkers kept quiet and didn’t press her about it.

In the pantry, everyone was gossiping about how Nicolas had gotten involved with a celebrity. “I can’t believe Nicolas just got divorced, and now he’s keeping a celebrity,” someone said.

“For a guy with his status, that’s just par for the course,” another replied.

“But I heard his ex-wife attempted suicide in the hospital just a few days ago…” someone else chimed in. “Seriously? You think it’s all because Nicolas hooked up with that celebrity?” another person asked.

Natasha listened to their gossip. Only now did she realize that Joelle’s suicide attempt wasn’t just because Nicolas wanted a divorce.

There was an even bigger reason: Nicolas had found himself a new flame right after the split. Joelle really deserved it.

After Joelle married Nicolas, she kept stringing along her ex-husband, Percy. She’d been keeping things flirty with her former brother-in-law for ages. It turned out that her own husband was also messing around with a celebrity.

He was just waiting for the divorce to be finalized so he could go public with his new girlfriend. That was what finally pushed Joelle over the edge and made her try to end it all.

Natasha gave a mocking twist to her lips. She finally felt vindicated, like all her pent-up resentment had been released.

‘Guess the universe really does keep score,’ she thought. ‘Some paybacks just take their sweet time.’

Natasha had just finished a meeting and returned to her office when the phone on her desk buzzed.

The internal phone rang. The receptionist said, “Ms. Whittier, someone’s here to see you. She says she’s your mom!”

Natasha instantly went on alert. “Where is she?”

The receptionist replied, “She’s already barged into the elevator and is coming up to see you.”

Natasha was speechless. Ever since she had that blow-up with Roxanne in Joelle’s ward, Sandra had been blowing up her phone.

For days now, Sandra had been reaching out nonstop. She had only one goal: she wanted Natasha to go back home and make amends with Roxanne.

Natasha wasn’t having it. She started ignoring Sandra’s calls completely.

‘I didn’t do anything wrong; why should I have to apologize?’ Natasha thought. She wasn’t that little girl they could control anymore. Now she was all grown up.

She had her own mind and her own opinions. She could stand on her own feet, even financially. Why should she be the one to clean up after their mess?

Natasha already knew what Sandra was after. She rubbed her forehead, feeling a headache coming on. She decided to make herself scarce.

But just as she opened her office door, Natasha looked up and saw Sandra, already waiting at the entrance. She blinked, surprised to find Sandra standing right there.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” Natasha asked, stunned.

Sandra demanded angrily, “Why haven’t you been answering my calls? Why won’t you reply to my messages?” Her voice echoed through the hallway, brimming with fury.

Her outburst caught everyone’s attention. Everyone on the executive floor couldn’t help but look over.

Seeing Sandra’s attitude, it didn’t look like a mother coming to talk to her daughter at all. It was more like a mother-in-law coming to lay blame on her daughter-in-law.

Natasha quickly moved aside. “Mom, can we talk inside?”

Sandra was shouting outside, and since this was her workplace, it was really inappropriate. But Sandra didn’t even bother to consider Natasha’s feelings. She was dead set on getting her way.

She was even trying to use Natasha’s worry ab Successfully unlocked! pressure on her. “Why can’t we talk right here?

Got something to hide?” Sandra glared at her, f

“I didn’t…” Natasha protested, her voice full of helplessness. “Mom, you really don’t know what happened in Joelle’s ward

that day.”

“I don’t care about the details! What matters is respecting your elders! No matter what Roxanne did, she’s still your mom How dare you talk back to her?” Sandra shot back, her anger barely contained.

“Me? I talked back to her?” Natasha frowned, feeling wronged and stifled inside.

“She started yelling at me first, then slapped me across the face…”

Sandra hadn’t changed a bit. Any time she and Roxanne fought, Sandra would make her apologize, without even caring who was to blame. She never bothered to ask how much Natasha had been hurt by it all.

Even though Roxanne had been bullying her for years, whenever Natasha tried to stand up for Sandra, she would always end up scolding her instead. And in the end, Roxanne ended up resenting Natasha more than anyone.

“You must’ve pissed off Roxanne; why else would she slap you?” Sandra blurted out, not even stopping to think.

Natasha felt deeply hurt. Sandra’s words cut right through her. She didn’t even want to say another word to her. It was impossible to get through to her; no matter what she said, Sandra would never understand.

“Believe whatever you want,” Natasha said, her voice flat and tired.

She turned away, heading back into her office. She wasn’t about to waste another second arguing. It always ended in disappointment anyway.

Sandra stepped in front of Natasha, blocking her way and refusing to let her leave.

“For the last time, are you coming back with me to apologize to Roxanne or not?” Sandra pressed, her tone harsh and uncompromising.

“No…” Natasha said instantly, not even giving it a second thought.

Sandra was furious; she couldn’t believe it. Even after tracking Natasha down at her office, she was still refusing to budge.

Fuming, Sandra swung her hand at Natasha, aiming to slap her. Natasha was totally caught off guard; she never thought Sandra would actually raise a hand against her. Especially not right here in her office.

By the time she felt the rush of air from Sandra’s hand, it was already too late. Natasha just shut her eyes, but the slap never landed.

Sandra’s wrist was caught mid-air. A man’s grip stopped her hand dead in its tracks, his strength leaving no room for resistance.

Sandra whipped around in shock, her eyes landing on the man who had suddenly shown up right next to them. It was Jared.

“And you are?” Sandra demanded, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the stranger.

Jared didn’t bother to answer. His face was set in a frosty mask, all sharp lines and icy indifference.

He looked over at Natasha. “I always thought you weren’t someone who’d let others push you around,” Jared said, his voice cool and steady.

Natasha froze, startled by Jared’s words. A look of embarrassment crossed her face. If it hadn’t been her own mother, she would’ve stood up for herself; no way would she let anyone hit her at work.

Jared shot a stern look at someone nearby and ordered, “Call security!”
