Chapter 204 The Funeral

Chapter 204 The Funeral

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Grosso. My hand slipped!” the servant quickly apologized in a low voice.

Lily, by the side, put on a show of reprimanding her. “What’s wrong with you? Can’t you even handle such a simple thing?”

Natasha knew that without Lily’s orders, the servant would never have dared to pull something like this. Lily was just jealous that Percy had stood up for her, so now she wanted to put Natasha in her place.

Natasha had been looking for an excuse to slip away anyway. Therefore, she said, “It’s fine. I’ll go clean up. Where’s my room?”

In the past, whenever Percy brought her back to the Grosso mansion, he would always put her in the guest room. If it were otherwise tonight, Lily would definitely be even more upset.

Natasha had no intention of sleeping in the same room as Percy, to begin with, so it worked out. As expected, Lily’s expression relaxed noticeably when Natasha took the hint and opted for the guest room.

“The same room as previously,” Lily said calmly. Natasha immediately stood up and walked toward the guest room.

As she stepped out of the dining room, she spotted Percy standing by the window, talking on the phone. “No matter what, you must find out her whereabouts,” Percy said, his voice low and urgent.

Natasha couldn’t help but pause in her tracks. ‘Who is Percy looking for?’ she wondered. Before she could think any further, Percy turned and looked right at her.

As their eyes met, a flash of guilt flashed in Percy’s gaze. He muttered something into the phone before heading over to Natasha. “Finished eating?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she replied.

Percy’s eyes drifted to the damp patch on her dress. “How did that happen?” he frowned.

“A servant accidentally spilled on me. I’ll clean up in my room,” Natasha brushed it off, not really bothered. Suddenly, she seemed to recall something.

“By the way, who were you talking about on the phone just now? Is Joelle missing again?” Natasha remembered her mom calling her earlier, saying Joelle had gone missing again. ‘Was Percy looking for Joelle just now?’ she wondered.

Percy’s eyes flickered. “No,” he said. Joelle was actually in his custody, but just now, one of his men had called to say they were close to figuring out who the owner of that handkerchief was.

Once they got to the bottom of it, he wouldn’t be controlled by Joelle anymore. He also wouldn’t have to go along with her demands to marry her. But he still hadn’t figured out how to break it to Natasha, so for now, he would keep it to himself.

Natasha didn’t press further. She just turned and headed upstairs. When she got back to the guest room, she immediately took off her dress and gave it a good wash.

But she didn’t expect the stain to be so stubborn. She scrubbed it for some time, but the stain wouldn’t budge. She had to attend the funeral with Percy tomorrow. If Lily caught her wearing a stained dress, she would definitely lecture her all over

again.

Just as she was worrying, a knock suddenly sounded at the door. Wrapped in a bathrobe, Natasha walked over and opened it. There she saw Percy standing outside, holding a set of black clothes.

“Wear this to the funeral tomorrow.” He handed the clothes to her, his voice gentle.

Natasha was momentarily stunned. She never thought Percy would go out of his way to bring her the clothes. It was nearly impossible for Percy to do this in the past.

“Thanks,” Natasha said. Percy was acting weird lately, and she had no clue why. Still, since he was being nice for once, she made sure to thank him.

After speaking, she closed the door under Percy’s odd stare, feeling uneasy. She somehow felt that Percy had a strange vibe with the way he looked at her.

‘Is he worried I won’t go along with his show tomorrow?’ she thought. ‘But since we’ve already made a deal, I’m ready to play my part till the end.’

At Brent’s funeral on the following day, almost Successfully unlocked! showed up. Jared arrived in the afternoon. After entering, he followed the same routine as cycle pause for a minute of silence in front of the portrait, then walked over to the family.

Gloria, overwhelmed with grief, couldn’t remain standing but sat in a chair. Clayton managed to keep it together, but he part to grip the chair to steady himself.

Jared came up to them and said softly, “My condolences.” He then shook Clayton’s hand Gloria whimpered and started crying softly again. Jared offered a few words of comfort and went down the line, shaking hands with each member of the Grosso family.

Natasha stood at the end of the Grosso family row, dressed in a black dress. Her hair was styled in an elegant updo, and she was exceptionally quiet.

Jared walked up to her and reached out. Natasha was caught off guard when she saw him. He actually showed up, too” she thought, surprised.

Jared was dressed in a black limited-edition suit today. His features were strikingly refined, his build tall and imposing He carried an air of cool detachment and aristocratic elegance.

When Natasha met his gaze, her heart couldn’t help but race with nervousness. She was afraid someone would discover the forbidden connection between her and Jared.

She bit her lip, then tentatively placed her hand in his palm. She just wanted to give him a quick handshake and be done with it. But to her surprise, Jared clasped her hand firmly and refused to let go.

Natasha was shocked. Her eyes flew open in disbelief. ‘Has he lost his mind?’ Natasha thought. ‘He’s actually holding my hand right here at the Grosso family’s funeral? Isn’t he afraid someone will find out about us?’ Her nerves were on edge. She was standing in the least noticeable spot among the Grosso family members. Everyone’s attention was focused on Brent’s funeral at the moment, and no one was paying them attention.

‘But what if someone actually sees us? What if, against all odds, someone catches us? Our reputations would be toast, she thought. ‘People would say I’m shameless, flirting with another guy at someone’s funeral.’

Natasha’s heart was pounding like crazy. Every nerve in her body tensed. “Let go!” she hissed urgently at him in a low voice. But Jared ignored her completely. Instead, he tightened his grip. His gaze grew even deeper as he looked at her. Natasha couldn’t figure out what his gaze meant. All she knew was that if he kept holding her hand like this, a disaster would happen. Just as she feared, trouble came knocking. She suddenly heard Percy’s voice right behind her.

“Mr. Rundell,” Percy called out, his voice cutting through the air.
