Chapter 257 Divorce Goes Public

Natasha slid the resignation letter across the desk to Jared.

Jared didn’t even spare her or the letter a glance.

He kept his head down, eyes fixed on his paperwork, and asked in a cold voice, “What’s this?”

Natasha said calmly, “Mr. Rundell, this is my resignation letter. Please approve it.”

Jared’s hand froze mid-motion.

He looked up, his eyes deep and unreadable. “You’re quitting?”

Natasha said, “Yes.”

Jared’s gaze sharpened. “What’s your reason?”

Natasha made up an excuse on the spot. “I’m not happy working here. Is it really so wrong to want to switch jobs?”

Jared’s face darkened. “That’s not a good enough reason to quit.”

Natasha tried another explanation. “Honestly, I don’t see any future in this assistant job. I want to quit and find something with better pay and benefits.”

‘That should be a good enough reason, right?’ she thought to herself.

Jared was silent for a moment.

Then he said sharply, “Ms. Whittier, when you were promoted to executive assistant, you signed a new contract with the

company.

“If you leave without following the proper procedure, you’ll have to pay a large breach-of-contract,fee.”

Natasha nodded. “I know. I can cover the fee.”

Jared’s lips were pressed into a thin line.

His eyes bore into her, intimidating and unyielding.

He radiated frustration and a simmering hostility, like he couldn’t shake off his anger.

“You really want to leave?” he asked.

‘Even if it means paying a massive breach-of-contract fee?’ Jared thought to himself.

“Yes,” Natasha replied without a second thought.

If she didn’t quit, their lives would keep getting tangled up together.

She’d already broken up with him, and she wanted to end things once and for all. She was done with all the ambiguity between them.

Jared tensed up, every muscle in his body going taut.

His eyes darkened, emotions swirling beneath the surface.

Suddenly, he slammed his fist down on the desk.

“Natasha, why are you so cold?” he demanded.

Natasha pressed her lips together, saying nothing.

‘What does that have to do with any of this?’ she thought.

Jared’s face was cold and grim.

His dark eyes were like daggers.

His gaze stabbed into her, sharp and merciless.

“Is this all because of your loser husband?” he demanded.

Natasha felt a fresh wave of confusion wash over her.

‘Seriously, what does Percy have to do with any of this?’ she thought.

Then it hit her. When she’d broken up with Jared before, she’d used Percy as her cover.

She’d told Jared she wanted to actually work c Successfully unlocked! nd didn’t want to keep up that messy friends

with benefits thing with him anymore.

So, Jared probably thought she was quitting because of Percy. Honestly, it made sense he’d think that way.

“Yeah, Natasha replied softly.

She gave a quiet answer.

She wanted him to believe she was doing this for Percy, that she was done with the messy, unclear relationship between her and Jared.

Jared’s eyes turned dangerously dark, almost frightening in their intensity.

There was a surge of pain he kept tightly under control.

But he buried it deep, refusing to let it show.

He shifted to a cold, businesslike tone. “Alright, if you want my approval to resign, that can be arranged. Pay the 3 million dollars penalty, and you’re free to go.”

Natasha was stunned. “3 million dollars?”

‘Wasn’t it supposed to be one million dollars or something?’ she thought.

Jared replied coolly, “You’re not some project department staff anymore. Now that you’re the executive assistant, your salary and benefits have gone up, so the penalty has doubled.

“If you can’t pay, I could lend you the money, as a personal favor.”

Natasha clenched her fists.

He acted like he was doing her a favor, offering to lend her the money.

But the whole point of her quitting was to get away from him.

Borrowing money from him would keep them tangled up together.

Then what was the point of quitting at all?

“No, thanks. I’ll figure out a way to come up with the money as soon as I can,” Natasha replied coolly.

She kept her tone calm, turning him down flatly, not giving him any room to push further.

Jared’s face was icy and aloof, giving off a vibe that kept her at arm’s length.

He gave her a curt dismissal. “I’ve got another meeting. Close the door on your way out.”

Natasha nodded with resignation and walked out.

Jared watched her walk away, his eyes shadowed with gloom.

After work, Natasha left the office building, her mind weighed down with worries.

She was still trying to figure out how to scrape together the 3 million dollars penalty.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

“It’s Lily. I want to see you,” Lily said over the phone.

Natasha met up with Lily at an exclusive beauty club.

Lily was a VIP there and regularly got facials.

She even had a private suite all to herself.

When Natasha arrived, she was led straight to Lily’s private suite.

Sure enough, Lily was already waiting for her inside.

“Have a seat,” Lily said.

She motioned for Natasha to sit down on the sofa.

Then Lily took a seat across from her.

“Say what you want,” Natasha said.

She got straight to the chase, skipping any small talk.

She hadn’t spoken to Lily in ages.

But she knew exactly what kind of person Lily was.

Normally, she’d rather not see her if she could help it.

For once in her life, Lily had actually reached out to Natasha. There had to be something going on.

Lily studied her for a moment. “I already know you and Percy have split.”
