She thought, ‘Is Roxanne actually trying to set me up with this widowed Nelson?

‘That is way too absurd.’

“Roxanne, I really don’t get what you’re saying,” Natasha said, at a loss for words.

Roxanne raised an eyebrow. “You don’t get it? Let me make it clear. Natasha, you’re single, and Nelson lost his wife. You two would make a good match.”

Natasha was utterly stunned by what Roxanne was suggesting. ‘Is she serious right now?’ she thought.

“May I ask, how old is Nelson?” Natasha asked.

Nelson, grinning, introduced himself. “I turned fifty-six this year.”

Roxanne added, “Fifty-six is really not that old. He’s not even sixty yet.”

Natasha couldn’t help but grimace.

‘Not even sixty? And that’s supposed to be young?’ she thought.

“I’m in my twenties, and you want to match me with a guy in his fifties? That’s over thirty years between us.” Natasha said.

She thought, ‘Is this for real?

‘Even if the Whittier family knows Percy and I have split, why are they so desperate to marry me off?

‘And he’s so old!

‘They’re screwing with me.’

Joelle, clearly enjoying herself, said, “Natasha, don’t you know it’s all the rage these days for older men to marry younger women?

“Mom and Dad are hooking you up with Nelson. You’re really getting a good deal here.”

Natasha retorted, annoyed, “If it’s such a good deal, why don’t you marry him yourself?”

Joelle was momentarily speechless.

Joelle retorted, “Too bad Nelson’s not into me. If he was, I’d totally go for it.”

Nelson jumped in, “Ms. Whittier, it was love at first sight for me. Your mom showed me your photo, and I was instantly hooked.”

Natasha felt totally creeped out by his words.

‘Who would ever be interested in some old dude pushing sixty?’ Natasha thought.

Now he was actually drooling over her. She felt like she was about to throw up.

Collin chimed in, “But isn’t Nelson a bit too old?”

Roxanne shot him a glare. “What do you know? Older men know how to treat a woman right. And when Nelson kicks the bucket, Natasha will get everything he owns.”

Joelle scoffed to herself.

She thought, ‘So Roxanne’s really got her eyes on Nelson’s money.

‘She’s trying to marry Natasha off to him for the cash.

‘Once Nelson croaks, the Whittier family will cash in big time.

‘Roxanne’s got some nerve.

‘They want to sacrifice me, and the whole family cashes in.’

Natasha snapped, “Roxanne, if you’re so fixated on Nelson’s fortune, why don’t you marry him yourself?”

“How dare you!”

Bernard, Bernard Whittier, slammed his hand on the table.

His expression turned grim. “This marriage isn’t your call. Like it or not, you’re going through with it.”

“Bernard!”

She spat Bernard’s name out, grinding her jaw in fury.

Her nails dug painfully into her skin.

Her face was a mask of fury.

Natasha thought, ‘I’ve never been so disappointed in my life.

‘So this is my father.

‘The one who should’ve been my shield.

‘Now he’s trying to pawn me off to some old guy.

‘No one in my life has ever hurt me more than him.’

But this time, Bernard didn’t even flinch when she called him by his name.

Instead, he tried to reason with her. “You really need to think this through. Percy doesn’t want you anymore. You’re not like Joelle, who’s the real deal in the Whittier family.

“Life’s never been easy for you as an illegitimate kid. Now that Nelson’s actually willing to marry you, you really shouldn’t be so choosy.”

He wasn’t yelling at her like he used to.

But every word still dripped with contempt and insult.

Natasha let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Yeah, I’m an illegitimate kid. So what? Doesn’t mean I’m so desperate I’d marry some old dude thirty years older than me!”

With that, she stood up, ready to leave.

Bernard shouted after her, “Don’t come crying to me when you regret this.”

Natasha let out a cold laugh and turned back. “If I said yes, that’s when I’d really regret it.”

With that, she shot Sandra a bitter, hateful look.

“Mom, I’m so disappointed in you.” Natasha said.

She thought, ‘You kept going on about how today was Grandma and Grandpa’s memorial day, calling me back to keep you company.

‘But in the end, it is another plot with Roxanne and Dad to screw me over.’

This wasn’t the first time.

Natasha swallowed the ache in her chest and turned to leave.

As she walked away, she couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down her face,

Collin was the only one who ever spoke up for her.

Too bad that, even though he was in line to inherit, he never really managed to step up and take charge.
