“What? On your very first day at Whittier Group, they sent you to the warehouse to move stuff around?” Dorothy couldn’t help but roast Natasha after hearing about her day at Whittier Group.

Natasha just shrugged. “I knew this was coming.”

Ever since she agreed to join Whittier Group, she’d already braced herself for this kind of treatment.

She figured she’d be benched for a while, left with nothing to do.

But she never expected they’d stick her in the warehouse.

At least she finally got something to do.

Way better than just sitting around bored out of her mind.

“But you’re not the kind to do manual labor. I seriously suspect Roxanne is behind this, just taking the chance to make things hard for you,” Dorothy complained, frustration clear in her voice.

Natasha had never done anything this physically demanding before.

And this was at her own family’s company, too.

It was way worse than any of her previous jobs.

Dorothy couldn’t help but wonder if Natasha was actually there to work or to suffer.

“No doubt she’s behind it. Roxanne even put in a word at my old company, making sure I got some extra ‘special treatment,” Natasha said with a cold laugh.

Since this was the Whittier family business, Roxanne could easily pull strings and make sure Natasha got plenty of that so-called “special treatment.”

Natasha’s dad always turned a blind eye to stuff like this.

He basically tossed her to Roxanne and let her do whatever she wanted.

So Roxanne dumped all her pent-up anger at her dad and Sandra right on Natasha.

This wasn’t the first time.

Natasha had gotten used to it ages ago.

If her dad ever stopped tossing her to Roxanne, and Roxanne finally let go of her grudge, that would be the

real shocker.

“Man, you’ve had it rough all these years,” Dorothy said, her voice full of sympathy.

Dorothy thought, ‘Seriously, what kind of family is the Whittier family?

‘They’re always picking on Natasha alone!

Natasha shook her head. “It’s not hard for me. I don’t even feel it anymore.”

After all these years, she’d gotten used to shouldering everything alone.

No matter how much hardship or exhaustion came her way, she wasn’t afraid.

Even if she had to face it all by herself, she’d grit her teeth and keep going, determined to live her life well.

It was another hectic day on the job.

Natasha taped up the last box.

She sorted the boxes and stacked them on the shelves.

The moment she stood up, a wave of dizziness hit her.

She nearly keeled over from low blood sugar.

Natasha barely caught herself in time.

That’s when she realized that she hadn’t eaten a thing all day.

No wonder she felt so dizzy and out of it.

Just then, a bottle of water was handed to her.

The female staffer next to her shot her a mocking grin. “Already struggling? Just wait, things are only going to get tougher for you.”

She was the only other woman in the warehouse besides Natasha.

Unlike Natasha, who was delicate and charming, this woman had a muscular build and darker skin.

She looked like she was made for hard work.

Her name was Margaret Avalos.

She’d been working in the warehouse for two and a half years.

Margaret was solidly built and never shied away from hard work.

She couldn’t stand girls like Natasha, those delicate, pampered types.

Natasha froze for a second.

She grabbed the water bottle Margaret handed her.

“Thanks. I’ll get the hang of it soon,” Natasha replied.

Margaret curled her lip in disdain.

She made it obvious she didn’t believe Natasha for a second.

“You think you can handle this?” Margaret sneered.

She openly mocked her. “Seriously? Doing this kind of work in a skirt? Aren’t you worried about giving everyone a show, or is that exactly what you want?

“This place is packed with big, rough guys, and trust me, none of them are rolling in cash. If you’re here to snag a rich man, you’ve definitely come to the wrong place.”

Natasha’s face went stiff.

A wave of humiliation hit her. She’d never felt this awkward before.

She couldn’t believe that even after quietly busting her ass, people still thought the worst of her.

“I’m just here to work, nothing else,” Natasha said firmly.

She gave Margaret a small smile and met her eyes. “But thanks for the reminder. The pants are more practical. I’ll start wearing jeans to work from tomorrow. Hope we can get along and work well together.”

Margaret snorted and shot her a contemptuous look. “Stick around if you think you can actually handle it.”

Margaret thought, ‘Someone as delicate as her? No way she’ll survive in this place for long.

‘She’ll probably disappear without a trace in three days.’

*****

Natasha was wiped out after a full day of work.

All she wanted was to go home, take a shower, and crash early.

But as soon as she got out of the car and looked up, she spotted a familiar, tall figure standing outside Dorothy’s apartment building.

Who else could it be but Percy?

Natasha thought, ‘What’s he doing here again?

Is he here to chase me for an answer?’

Natasha still remembered how, a week ago, Percy had used Dorothy to threaten her, trying to force her into getting back together with him.

Shed barely managed to keep him at bay and stall for time.

Natasha had thought Percy had forgotten about it.

But here he was again, showing up out of nowhere.

Looks like he wasn’t going to back off until she finally said yes.

“Hey, just got off work? Are you tired?” Percy called out.

Percy stepped up, concern written all over his face.

Natasha was still haunted by what had happened with Percy. She couldn’t shake off the lingering fear.

She kept her expression unreadable and asked in a flat voice, “What are you doing here?”

“Surprise, I’m your neighbor now,” Percy said with a grin, raising an eyebrow.

Natasha was visibly startled.

‘Did I just hear that right?’ she thought.

“What did you just say?” Natasha blurted out.

Percy repeated, “I said I’m living in this apartment building now, right next door to Dorothy’s place.”

Natasha’s eyes flew open in shock.

She’d bet anything that Percy did this on purpose.

Natasha thought again, ‘He really moved in right next to Dorothy?

‘No way in hell is he just being innocent. I am not buying it for a second.’

Natasha opened her mouth, but held back what she wanted to say.

Her eyes flashed with all kinds of emotions.

But finally, her expression settled into calm.

She just replied with a flat, indifferent “Mm.”

What Percy did was his business. It had nothing to do with her.

She and Percy had been divorced for ages. There was nothing between them anymore.
