Jared shrugged and grinned. “Yeah, I left work early just to spend time with you. Aren’t you happy?”

The last rays of the setting sun streamed in through the window, bathing his handsome face in a warm glow.

It was like a golden aura wrapped around him, blurring the line between reality and fantasy.

Natasha forced herself to look away from him. ‘No way I’m letting him charm me that easily, she thought.

“What’s there to be happy about? Until the real mastermind behind the BC Project leak is found, I’m just getting blamed for something I didn’t do and stuck here,” Natasha grumbled.

Jared’s gaze suddenly turned serious. “Isn’t it nice staying here? I haven’t made you pay anything back, and I’m not holding you responsible.

“Plus, you’re getting a free vacation at my villa, courtesy of the company. Isn’t that worth it, even if you’re being accused?”

Natasha shot him an angry glare. “Worth it? I don’t want my coworkers thinking I’m the mole who betrayed the company!”

‘Does he seriously think I want to stay here?’ Natasha thought, annoyed.

All she wanted was for him to hurry up and catch the real culprit, and expose whoever actually sold out the company.

That way, she could finally clear her name and get out of here.

A shadow passed through Jared’s dark eyes, barely noticeable.

His hands instinctively clenched into fists.

He realized now, she had absolutely no desire to stay here with him.

He’d already figured out who was really pulling the strings, it was his Harley.

And the mole who sold out the company was the manager.

He just didn’t have any solid proof to tie them to it yet.

He’d originally planned to tell her.

But now, he suddenly changed his mind.

He was pretty sure that if she ever found out, she’d want nothing more than to leave right away.

But deep down, he selfishly wished he could keep her all to himself.

He desperately wanted her to think about him every single day.

He wished he were the only one she ever cared about.

Natasha noticed he suddenly went quiet and was staring at her so intently it made her uneasy.

Something about it felt off.

“Why are you staring at me like that? Aren’t you supposed to be chasing down whoever leaked the BC Project? Why do you look like you’ve got all the time in the world?” Natasha asked, her voice tinged with suspicion.

She thought, ‘The BC Project had been leaked.

‘There is a rat in the company who has sold him out.

‘Shouldn’t he be freaking out right now?

‘And yet, here he is, still finding time to tease me.’

He replied in a relaxed, unhurried tone, “What’s done is done, worrying won’t change anything.

“I just wanted to let you know, your friend’s awake.”

Natasha’s eyes widened with delight. “Really? Dorothy’s awake?”

“Yeah.” Jared nodded.

Watching her light up like that, Jared felt a surprising warmth spread through him, her happiness was contagious.

‘When did I start letting her mess with my emotions like this?’ he wondered.

Natasha didn’t even bother with Jared anymore. She snatched up her phone and dialed Dorothy right away.

Dorothy had just woken up and was still pretty weak.

The call was answered by the caregiver Jared had arranged for her.

Once Natasha confirmed Dorothy was actually awake, she asked the caregiver to start a video call and turn the camera

Natasha saw Dorothy lying in the hospital bed, her face pale and weak. Dorothy managed to give her a faint smile

Natasha felt a huge weight finally drop from her shoulders.

Jared came downstairs and sat down on the couch, rubbing his temples.

“Mr. Rundell!” Margot hurried over with a cup of drink for him.

“How’s she doing today?” Jared asked, his face unreadable as he suddenly spoke up.

Margot quickly replied, “Ms. Whittier was up early and spent the whole day in her room reading. She kept to herself and didn’t make a peep.”

Jared narrowed his eyes. “Did she mention me at all?”

Margot blinked, then shook her head. “Nope, not a word about you.”

A flicker of disappointment crossed Jared’s heart.

He thought, ‘Seriously, what was I expecting?

‘As if Natasha would ever think about me.’

Margot paused, looking puzzled. “But Ms. Whittier got a call this morning. I think I heard her mention something about the City Hall and divorce?”

She wasn’t sure if she’d heard it right.

‘Ms. Whittier’s still so young, why would she be going to the City Hall for a divorce? Margot wondered.

Jared’s eyes sparkled with excitement.

Suddenly, everything felt clear, like a fog had lifted.

He realized, ‘She’s getting a divorce.

‘I’m over the moon.

‘Did she finally get it together and decide to ditch that useless husband?

‘Is this finally my chance?’

Dorothy had just woken up and was still very weak, so Natasha kept the video call short and hung up soon after.

There was an unread message on her phone.

She unlocked her phone and saw that the message was from Sandra. [My birthday’s next week. You don’t need to come home. Joelle will celebrate with me.]

Natasha read the text, and her heart clenched.

Ever since she was a kid, Natasha was the only one in the whole Whittier family who ever remembered Sandra’s birthday.

Since Sandra was the second wife and never got much attention, her birthdays were always pretty low-key.

Usually, it was just the two of them, quietly sharing a birthday cake.

It was nothing like the way Roxanne always went all out for her own birthday.

But even so, Natasha always felt happy about it.

Because it was the one time she got to be alone with Sandra.

It was only on Sandra’s birthday that she’d actually be soft and kind to Natasha.

This year, Natasha had already picked out a birthday gift for Sandra way ahead of time.

Even though Sandra had always been hard on her, she still wanted to invite Sandra out and spend her birthday together, just the two of them.

Natasha was caught off guard that Sandra actually wanted to celebrate with Joelle this year.

Natasha wondered, ‘What’s up with Joelle?

‘Joelle never remembers Mom’s birthday. Why is she suddenly making a big deal out of it?

‘First, she snatched my husband. Was that not enough for her? Now she’s coming for my mom, too?’
