The groomsmen and Phoebe came flooding in behind him, blocking the terrace entrance.

“Wow, Emma-you’re something else!”

One of the groomsmen-always running his mouth-called out first, grinning. “This is one hell of a prank!”

“Wandering off to the next ballroom? Poor Holden’s been losing his mind looking for you!”

“Right?” Another one chimed in, scanning the unfamiliar but lavishly decorated hall packed with guests.

“This place is nice though. Emma, did you think our setup wasn’t good enough? Coming to scope out the competition?”

Phoebe hurried over to me.

Her tone was deliberately light and chummy. “Emma, seriously… you almost gave Holden a heart attack.”

She smiled, eyes sweeping over my wedding dress. “That gown’s pretty, but you’re not here to crash someone else’s wedding, babe.”

“Come on. Everyone’s waiting.”

I didn’t move.

She leaned in closer. Dropped her voice to a teasing whisper.

“Emma… technically, under the law right now, you’re the mistress. But don’t take it personally. We all know the truth, right?”

She blinked sweetly. “Congrats on your big day, by the way.”

I glanced at her. Smiled faintly. “Thanks.”

Her smile froze. She hadn’t expected that.

Holden stepped in front of me.

His eyes held reproach. Exasperation.

But mostly? That smug certainty-I knew you’d throw a fit, but you’d come back.

“Done with your call?”

“Let’s go. We’ve wasted enough time, but we can still make it work.”

He paused.

Like he was being generous, he added: “If you really like this ballroom’s setup…”

His gaze swept the room. “I’ll talk to the Yorks. We can probably switch.”

“Whatever makes you happy.”

He said it so casually. So confidently.

Chapter 8

Like me being here, wearing a different wedding dress, was just another tantrum.

And he? He was the patient, forgiving fiancé, here to bring his wayward bride back home.

The groomsmen and bridesmaids behind him all watched me expectantly.

Waiting for me to do what I always did-put up a little fight, pout a little-then fall back in line.

Walk back to Holden’s side.

Walk toward the wedding meant for Mrs. Harrington.

Holden held out his hand. Palm up.

I looked at his handsome face-tinged with impatience.

Under everyone’s watchful eyes, I turned slightly.

Spoke softly to the hotel attendant who’d been standing quietly beside me.

“Excuse me-could you let the officiant know we’re ready to begin?”

The attendant bowed respectfully. “Of course, Mrs. York.”

“Mr. York is ready as well.”

Mrs. York?
