Chapter 10
Chapter 10
The ceremony reached its pivotal moment.
The officiant’s voice rang out, warm but solemn: “Emma Caldwell, do you take Ashton York to be your lawfully wedded husband-to have and to hold, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”
Every eye locked on me.
“I do.”
Clear. Steady. No hesitation.
“NO!”
Holden’s eyes blazed red. He glared at me like a madman. “Emma! I don’t accept this!”
“You’re not marrying him! You’re mine! You’re leaving with me!”
He lunged toward the altar-but security grabbed him before he got two steps.
“Get off me! Do you know who I am?!”
He thrashed. His expensive suit twisted and wrinkled. All that polished composure? Gone.
“Emma! Look at me! I’m the one you’re supposed to marry!”
“York-let her go!”
The York elders frowned slightly. But they didn’t panic. Clearly prepared for disruptions.
Then a flash of white tore through the crowd.
Phoebe.
She’d put the wedding dress back on.
She shoved her way to the front, phone held high, screen facing the guests. Voice shrill.
“Everyone! This is a mistake! I’m the Harrington bride!”
“We’re already married! Look!”
She jabbed a finger at me, trembling. “That woman? She’s a homewrecker!”
“She got caught and ran off to marry someone else!”
She thrust her phone toward the officiant. Toward the York family. Toward the guests.
On the screen-a marriage certificate.
“Emma! You’re pathetic! You only married Mr. York to get back at us!”
“You can hide behind the Yorks all you want-you’re still a mistress! You’ll always be a joke!”

Chapter 10
She dropped her bomb.
The room exploded.
Shocked stares ping-ponged between Phoebe’s phone and me.
My parents’ faces went from confusion to ash. Fear? Rage? Hard to tell.
Everyone held their breath. Waiting for the Yorks to react. Waiting for me to crack.
Phoebe stood tall, chin up, waiting for her dramatic comeback to land.
But the first person to explode?
Not the Yorks. Not me.
Holden.
“Phoebe! Shut up! What the hell are you doing?!”
Even pinned by security, he twisted around and screamed at her.
“I’m not lying!” Phoebe shot back, waving her phone. “You won’t even admit I’m your wife?!”
“That’s fake! A bar stunt! It doesn’t count!”
Holden was spiraling.
He couldn’t admit it. Not here. Not on York territory. Not in front of Emma.
“Fake or not-easy enough to check the civil registry, isn’t it?”
Ashton finally spoke.
He leaned toward an assistant and murmured something.
The man nodded and left quickly.
Security escorted Holden and Phoebe out.
The officiant raised his voice. “Please remain calm. Let’s continue.”
Vows exchanged. Toasts made. Blessings received.
Everything flowed smoothly. Guests mingled. The atmosphere was warm, celebratory-a true power union.
By the time the last guest left, I finally exhaled in the VIP lounge.
Ashton handed me a glass of water.
“Tired?”
Concern in his voice. But no overstepping.
Our marriage was a transaction. But his kindness? Real

“I’m okay.” I shook my head, watching the sunset through the window. “Today… thank you.”
“Just keeping my word.” He smiled faintly. “The Yorks don’t break promises.”
“As for the Caldwells and Harringtons…”
