Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I hang up on him.
After they discharge me, I head home to pack my shit.
But the second I reach the door, I freeze.
Our wedding portrait-tossed outside like garbage.
Hawk’s grinning face stares up at me from the cracked frame.
Something twists in my chest.
Whatever. It’s over anyway.
I punch in the code. Door swings open.
Immediately-oh god, Hawk, right there-coming from the bedroom.
I glance around the living room.
Every single photo of us? Gone.
He couldn’t even wait a day to erase me.
I stand there listening to them screw while I throw clothes into my suitcase.
Then I go for my parents’ memorial photo.
It’s not on the shelf.
My blood goes cold.
I kick the bedroom door open so hard it slams against the wall.
They scramble apart. Gwen shrieks.
“Where the fuck is my parents’ photo?!”
Hawk yanks the blanket over her, face flushed.
“Jesus Christ, Sophia-you can’t just barge in here like some-”
I cross the room in three steps and slap him so hard my palm stings.
“Answer me! Where is it?!”
Gwen’s bare leg shoots out from under the covers-kicks me straight in the gut
I double over, gasping. Fresh pain rips through my abdomen.
“Hit me all you want, bitch, but keep your hands off him.” She smirks. “Oh wait-you’re not Mrs. Professor anymore, are you? Guess I don’t have to play nice.”

Chapter S
Hawk flinches-just for a second-but says nothing.
Just clears his throat.
“Gwen knocked the frame over by accident. I was gonna get a new one. The photo’s fine-it’s on the coffee table.”
“Where?!”
“Living room. Coffee table.”
I limp to the table, tearing through magazines and coasters.
Nothing.
“It’s not here!”
Gwen gasps, hand flying to her mouth.
“Oh no… wait, when I was tidying up earlier… did I throw it out?”
I rip through every trash can in the apartment. Hands black with grime. Knees scraped.
Still nothing.
“Where did you put it?!”
She taps her forehead like she just remembered.
“Oh god, the housekeeper was leaving and I asked her to take the trash down… it might be in the truck…”
I don’t think.
Just run.
Hawk shouts behind me. “Sophia, wait-”
“Stay the hell away from me!”
I hit the street just as the garbage truck pulls away.
I chase it barefoot. My slipper falls off. I trip over the curb, twist my ankle,
Doesn’t matter.
I keep running.
But the truck’s too fast.
It rounds the corner and disappears.
I collapse on the pavement, sobbing so hard I can’t breathe.
Hawk jogs up, breathing heavy. Reaches for me.
I slap his hand away.

Chapter 5
“You knew how much that photo meant to me! Why would you let her anywhere near it?!”
“Sophia, come on-it was an accident-”
“Bullshit! She did it on purpose!”
He just stands there. Doesn’t argue. Doesn’t defend me.
I’m choking on tears now, voice breaking.
“My parents died when I was ten. That photo was the only thing I had left.
They were everything to me. And you let some stranger destroy them.”
His voice softens-trying to sound reasonable.
“Look, we can fix this. Al’s crazy good now. You’ve got the photo saved on your phone, right? We’ll just reprint it.”
He crouches down, reaching for me.
“Gwen didn’t mean it. She’s not that kind of person.”
I shove him so hard he nearly falls backward.
“You’re really gonna stand here and defend her?” My voice cracks. “Were you in on it too? Those fake photos she made?”
