Chapter 5
Chapter 5
That night. I spent hours in the bathroom, throwing up over and over.
Isolde wasn’t the only one who’d gotten drunk at that dinner.
I did too.
Caspian came home around noon. I was eating soup I’d ordered in.
Normally, he would’ve scolded me for ordering takeout. Said it was unhygienic.
But today, he sat down across from me, actually looked interested.
How is it? Good?”
glanced up, surprised. Nodded.
le leaned forward, eyes on mine, and sighed dramatically.
Babe, you have no idea how exhausting it is to take care of a drunk. The second she sobered up, I rushed straight home.”
lis voice was shaky. Guilty.
didn’t call him out.
Oh. That sounds rough.”
e blinked. Like he hadn’t expected me to go along with it.
is smile faltered, then he cleared his throat.
o, uh, tomorrow-my buddy Rafferty’s getting engaged. He invited me to the party. Wanna come with me?”
looked up, surprise flashing in my eyes.
the past, Caspian would never have brought me to something like this.
is friends didn’t like me. So he always brought Isolde instead.
this had been a year ago, I would’ve jumped at the chance and started picking out what to wears
it now?
ust kept eating.
11 pass. Don’t wanna make things awkward for your friends.”
is hand, halfway across the table, froze mid air.
e pulled it back awkwardly.
‘ou’re my wife. They’re not gonna treat you badly.”
looked up at him.
e sounded sincere.
at I remembered the times his friends had torn me apart in front of him. Compared me to Isolde.
Chapter 5
I’d looked at him, silently begging him to defend me.
He never did.
When I confronted him afterward, he would say.
“I mean, they’re not wrong.”
“If you can’t even get along with my friends, what kind of wife does that make you?”
But he KNEW.
The way his friends treated me depended entirely on his own.
1 closed the takeout container.
“I’m busy tomorrow anyway. Maybe take someone else?”
Caspian stared at me in disbelief.
He had never imagined I would refuse him so bluntly-or suggest he bring someone else.
I used to beg for invitations like this.
But I wasn’t lying. I really was busy.
I still had a mountain of paperwork to finish for my visa.
His expression fell.
The hope in his eyes faded completely.
“What are you doing tomorrow? I can come with you. We can do it together.”
