Chapter 7
Chapter 7
The 8th. 10 AM. I’m outside the county building.
Hawk’s in a fresh white shirt. Gwen’s hanging off his arm in some breezy white dress.
He spots me and does a double take.
Guess he wasn’t expecting me to clean up this nice.
He brushes past without a word. Just mutters:
“Let’s do this.”
The second I walk through those doors, I’m crying.
Can’t help it.
Last time I was here? Seven years ago.
Hawk had practically dragged me inside, bouncing off the walls with excitement.
“Oh my god, Soph! We’re actually getting married! Like, for real!”
“I can’t believe this is happening! Pinch me! Is this real?!”
I’d just laughed at how ridiculous he looked and kept saying yes, it’s real, over and over.
We never imagined we’d be back here.
Not for this.
I sign the papers. It’s done.
Gwen loops her arm through his and tugs him toward the door.
He walks out.
Doesn’t look back.
2 PM. Same building. Different room.
Hawk’s pacing outside the courtroom.
“Seriously, Sophia? I thought you dropped this whole thing. Then you delay it a month-what’s the play here?”
I smile.
“Wasn’t me. Gwen got sick, remember? Hospital stay? I just rolled with the new date.”
He frowns like that’s news to him.
“Whatever. You’re gonna get torn apart in there. I got her the top lawyer in the state. Guy’s undefeated.”

I glance over, Gwen’s smirking at me from down the hall.
I turn back to Hawk. Shrug.
“Cool. She still faked those photos. Even if she skates, she’s getting a record.”
He clenches his jaw.
“I read the filing last week.”
“You cheated. Just own it.”
“Lying about someone in court? That’s perjury, Sophia.”
“I got her the best defense so you wouldn’t get buried. Ten years of history. Seven married. I don’t wanna watch you crash and burn.”
I don’t answer. Just walk in and sit down.
Judge bangs the gavel. We’re on.
My lawyer’s solid. But Hawk’s guy? Ruthless. Wipes the floor with us.
Gwen’s practically glowing. Shoots me a cocky little smirk.
I wait.
Then I slide a stack of papers across the table.
“Actually? I do have evidence. Right here. Proof she used AI to fabricate cheating photos.”
Clerk projects them onto the screen.
Screenshots from Gwen’s phone. Al prompts. Instructions for generating fake images of me kissing some random dude.
Hawk goes pale.
Gwen jumps up.
“You broke into my PHONE?! How did you even-”
That day I went back for my stuff-while they were busy in the bedroom-her phone was on the couch.
Tried Hawk’s birthday.
Unlocked instantly.
“Doesn’t matter,” I say. “But thanks for confirming these are legit.”
She’s spiraling now. Looks at Hawk like he’s supposed to save her.
His face goes cold. Jaw tight. But he nods at his lawyer.
“Fine. She doctored some images. But the original hug photo-that one’s real.”
I drop another stack on the table. Text screenshots.

Chapter 7
“Tve never met that guy. But she has. He’s her ex.”
“She dared him to hug me on the street. Told him to act like he mixed me up with someone else.”
“She took the picture herself.”
Hawk’s face cracks.
He stares at Gwen. Waiting.
She sees it slipping away. Grabs her stomach. Pulls out a folded paper.
Leans close to Hawk-whispers so the judge can’t hear.
“I’m pregnant. It’s yours.”
“I screwed up. I know. Just… please. Get me out of this.”
So that’s her big surprise.
