Chapter 8
Hawk’s fist goes slack.
Eyes dart between me and Gwen. Back and forth.
He catches his lawyer’s attention. Nods once. Then squeezes his eyes shut like he’s bracing for impact.
The lawyer jumps in.
“Strong evidence from the plaintiff. But who’s to say these texts aren’t doctored too?”
I snort. Slide my final stack across the table.
“Hey Gwen? Random question-what made you decide to get that little surgical touch-up? You know, the hymen thing?”
“Was it so my ex-husband would feel guilty enough to wife you up?”
Gwen’s face goes ash-gray.
Hawk’s eyes fly open. He’s locked onto the medical paperwork in my hands like it’s a loaded gun.
His whole face flushes purple. Voice raw.
“You played me?”
“No! I swear-”
“Then what the hell is THIS?!”
Gwen’s shaking now. Points a trembling finger at me.
“She-she made it all up! Photoshopped everything!”
Someone rises from the gallery. Mask comes off.
It’s Summer.
“Gwen Harper, right? I’m the doc who stitched you back up. Ring any bells?”
Gwen looks like she’s about to vomit. Staggers backward.
“You can’t-that’s illegal! Doctor-patient privilege! I’ll report you!”
Summer laughs.
“Go ahead. I handed in my resignation yesterday. Figured I’d blow up one homewrecker on my way out.”
Hawk explodes. Both fists hit the desk.
Doesn’t care that the judge is right there. Just roars at Gwen.
“So the virgin story was bullshit! And you made me think Sophia was screwing around behind my back! Made me think she got pregnant by
some OTHER guy!”

Chapter 8
Gwen’s practically melting into her chair. Looks desperately at her lawyer.
Who does absolutely nothing
Because Hawk’s the one paying him.
Hawk’s vibrating with rage but forces himself to sit. Waves the lawyer down.
Judge reads out the ruling.
Three hundred grand in damages. Defamation. Privacy violations. Intentional destruction of a marriage.
Pregnancy gets her out of jail time.
For now.
Shell serve thirty days once the kid’s weaned.
Gavel’s about to drop when someone else stands.
A guy in the back.
The same guy from the photos. The one who hugged me.
“Hold up. She also forged hospital documents to push this hearing back. Used my credentials.”
Everyone turns.
He looks pissed.
“She showed up at the hospital a month ago. Said she needed help with something. Then snuck off and wrote herself a fake sick note under my
name.”
“Cost me my job when administration found out.”
The judge’s eyes narrow.
“Defendant, is this accurate?”
Gwen’s folded in on herself. Won’t answer.
Hawk looks gutted. Face blotchy. Tears running down his jaw.
He stares at me like he’s seeing me for the first time in years.
Judge amends the sentence.
Three years detention. Deferred until post-breastfeeding.
Outside, Hawk sprints after me.
Slaps himself. Once. Twice. Hard enough to leave marks.
“Sophia-god, I’m such an idiot!”
“She had me completely fooled! I thought she was this sweet, innocent girl-and I threw away everything we had for her!”
