Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I’ve closed billion dollar deals without flinching.
But “mom”? That word hit different.
Still married, and he’s already got her meeting the family?
Something dark coiled in my gut. I smiled back.
“Hi.”
“Come in. I’m Jasmine.”
First thing I see-huge U.S. map covering the whole wall. Red strings everywhere, pinning photos of them kissing. Every pin marks a trip.
Dozens of them. Coast to coast.
She notices me staring. Smiles wider.
“It’s our travel board. He takes me somewhere new every month.”
So this started way earlier than I thought.
She takes my coat like we’re friends. Hangs it up real careful.
Hands me coffee-perfect temp.
I scan the place. Downtown prime real estate, 2,000 square feet, this finish level? Fifty mil easy.
“He bought this for you?”
Her cheeks flush. “Yeah.”
“Lucas said it’s my PhD gift.”
Ten years married. Never celebrated one holiday. Not one piece of real jewelry.
My birthday? Store-bought cake and a text.
I told myself love just settles. Gets comfortable.
Bullshit. Love doesn’t settle. It just moves on.
She shifts on her feet. Finally works up the nerve,
“Ma’am… we’re serious. Will you give us your blessing?”
Thought I was numb.
My chest still tightened. Words slipped out.
“How’d you meet?”

Chapter 1
Jasmine lights up. And suddenly I remember-that night I was burning with fever. We were already loaded, but he bolted for some ten grand
deal
Because she texted: “Miss you.”
“Ma’am, when he first saw me, he said I lit up his whole world.”
“And he’s so smart-scary smart. Fixed this massive tech problem for my dad’s company. Took him one look.”
“So… will you say yes?”
Big hopeful eyes locked on mine.
I leaned back, lips curving.
“You know he’s married, right?”
She blinks. Bites her lip.
“Lucas told me… he doesn’t love her. It’s just business. No real feelings.”
“He said she’s older than his aunt. No personality. Turned herself into a guy. Her skin’s disgusting.”
I rub my calloused palms-scars from hauling cheese sacks in the startup days.
Every night back then, he’d rub thick cream into my hands. Massage them till I fell asleep.
Called me the backbone of everything we built.
“Honestly, what man would want that?”
