Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I was about to answer when Jasmine’s phone rang. She put it on speaker.
Lucas’s voice came through-low, smooth, tender. I’d never heard him sound like that.
“Baby, you hungry? Got your favorite lobster bisque. Be there in fifteen.”
I knew that place. Three-hour wait, clear across town.
Once when I was laid up with a busted ankle, craving something light, I mentioned it.
He was sitting by the bed peeling an apple. Didn’t even look up.
Jasmine went full lovesick puppy, blowing kisses at the phone.
“Love you so much, babe!”
While they cooed at each other, I slipped into the bathroom.
Men’s toiletries everywhere-more than we had at home.
I texted my assistant Emily. Told her to pull every goddamn transaction Lucas made in the last year.
He’s burning my money on her? That bastard’s gonna pay.
Just as I’m about to head out, Lucas’s voice echoes from the hall.
“Look what else I got you.”
Jasmine squeals. “The sapphire from yesterday!”
“I only looked at it once and you bought it!”
“Well, I’ve got a surprise for you too!”
She skips over, taps on the bathroom door all mysterious-like.
“Ma’am, you done in there?”
I shut off the faucet. Opened the door.
Jasmine bounces between us, arms flung wide.
“Perfect timing! Huge news-let’s celebrate together.”
“Hubby gave me sapphires. I’m giving him a baby!”
My whole body locks up. I snap my head toward her.
After Luke was born, I wanted a daughter so bad.
He always had excuses. Turns out he just didn’t want one with me.

Chapter 2
Lucas is grinning-until his eyes slide past Jasmine and lock on mine.
His smile dies. Pupils shrink. Like I’m the one who crashed their little paradise.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
I walk back to my seat. Let my eyes drift between them.
My silence pisses him off.
He pulls Jasmine behind him.
“You got a problem? Take it up with me. Leave her out of it.”
Jasmine looks confused. Tugs his sleeve.
“Isn’t she your mom?”
Lucas freezes. Then laughs-cold, mean.
“Sweet girl, your eyes aren’t wrong. She does look old as hell.”
“But she’s my wife.”
Jasmine’s face cycles through shock, horror, realization. Hands fly to her mouth.
“Mrs. Winston… I-I didn’t mean-”
“I’m so-”
She stammers, face turning red.
Lucas wraps an arm around her, glares at me.
“Don’t apologize to her.”
“Chloe. Get out.”
Jasmine peeks out from his chest. Eyes me with a smug little glint.
I drain the last of my coffee. Grab my coat. Walk right up to her.
“Your request earlier? I agree.”
Elevator doors start closing. Lucas bolts out, jams his hand in to stop them.
He’s staring at me-thrown off because I’m not yelling. There’s panic in his eyes. Just a flicker.
