Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I drove back to the office. Pulled out the divorce papers I’d been sitting on.
Truth is. I drafted them the first time I caught him messing around.
Love just took a little longer to die than trust.
Back then, Lucas sliced himself open-literally-swearing on his blood it’d never happen again.
I stood there staring at the puddle spreading across the floor, my barely-showing belly, our startup just taking off. Made the “rational” choice.
Let it slide.
“Mrs. Winston, they’re here.” Emily knocked.
After some back-and-forth, I sold every share I owned.
Yeah, the factory was my baby. But once something’s rotted through? Not worth keeping.
I only wanted one thing-my kid.
My phone alarm went off. Time to pick Luke up from preschool.
Except Lucas beat me there.
Jasmine was crouched next to my son, holding up some massive Ultraman cotton candy.
Luke’s face lit up in a way I’d never seen.
“Who do you like more, sweetie-me or Mommy?” Jasmine’s voice dripped sugar.
Luke giggled, poked her dimple.
“How about I become your mommy? And give you a baby brother to play with?”
My son nodded hard. Stood on his tiptoes to kiss her cheek.
Lucas scooped Luke up with one arm, took Jasmine’s hand with the other. Walked them across the street.
He saw my car. Eyes flicked to the driver’s seat.
Paused on my face for half a second.
Then got in his car with them.
I sat there, brain buzzing static. AC blasting my face red.
Took forever to snap out of it.
Lucas wanted me to see that.
Ever since Luke started preschool, he’d been dodging my hugs.
I thought it was because I was too strict. Now I know better.

Chapter 3
Turns out the perfect family” I thought we had? just my own delusion.
Too bad Lucas miscalculated. Thought I’d keep swallowing this shit for Luke’s sake.
Nobody-nobody-is stopping me from walking out.
Got home. Luke was playing with the remote-control car Jasmine gave him.
Lucas came up behind me like nothing happened. Wrapped his arms around my waist.
“You wanted a daughter, right?”
“I’ll give you one tonight.”
His guilty little peace offering made my skin crawl.
I shoved him off.
“Save it for Jasmine.”
Lucas thought I was still pissed. Started pawing at me harder, trying to get a rise.
Our old routine-fight, fuck, forget.
Not this time.
He grabbed the back of my neck. Shoved me forward.
Got too close-the cheese smell baked into my skin made him turn his head on reflex.
The more I fought, the harder he gripped.
BANG.
My head slammed into the wall.
Everything spun. He grabbed the back of my skull instinctively.
His phone rang.
Few seconds later, he let go. Face went cold.
“Fine. Your choice. Saves me from popping pills just to get it up for you.”
Didn’t need to guess who called.
Lucas changed shirts, doused himself in cologne. Threw one last line over his shoulder on his way out.
“Enough drama. Don’t forget to prep the cash for next week’s company party.”
Every year he loved playing big shot-handing out year-end bonuses in cash.
Half the time he miscounted. Caused all kinds of employee drama.
One year I got mugged on the way to pick up the money. Ended up in the ER.

Now he’s burned through the company accounts on Jasmine.
Where the hell’s he gonna get the cash to save face?
