April Fools “Surprise” Husband Divorcing Me For His “Pure” Girl novel Chapter 86

Chapter 9

Chapter 9

After Lucas dragged Jasmine out, my office went quiet again.

1 had Emily order a new door.

Next month, Lucas tried everything to reach me.

Calls. Texts. Flowers. Camped outside the building.

I blocked him. Even moved offices.

He wouldn’t stop.

Then one rainy evening, he stormed into the lobby-soaked, wild-eyed. Security grabbed him.

I sighed. Walked over. Handed him a tissue.

He’d lost weight. Eyes sunken. Clutching a velvet box.

“Chloe.” His voice cracked. “Spent the last of my money on this. You said you liked it once.”

He opened the box. Tiny diamond brooch. Outdated style. Dull stone.

“Remember? Third year of the business. Your birthday. We saw something like this at a night market. You said it was pretty, but we needed equipment money. You pulled me away.” His eyes watered. “I’m giving it to you now.”

I looked at the brooch. Felt nothing.

“Lucas.”

“Stop living in the past. Stop harassing me.”

“We both move on-that’s the best outcome. You really want to force my hand?”

His hands started shaking.

“You leaving?” I asked.

He dropped to his knees. Grabbed my legs.

“I can’t do this without you… I know I fucked up, I know… Look-I made Jasmine abort the baby. Sent her abroad. We can start over. Like before. I’ll take you everywhere, try all the food you want-”

His phone rang.

He kept hanging up.

It kept ringing.

“Answer it,” I said. Sat down nearby.

Hospital. Jasmine wouldn’t stay in bed after the abortion. Tried to find Lucas. Hemorrhaging. Critical.

Chapter 9

“She can die for all I care!”

Lucas roared into the phone. Hung up.

I kept my hands in my pockets. Stayed a meter away from him.

“Chloe, I even got a vasectomy. Ten years together-we can’t just throw that away!”

“You’re pathetic.”

I cut him off.

“I’ll admit-I felt a little sorry for you.”

“But this is your last warning. Show your face again, and I’m pressing bigamy charges with all the evidence I have.”

Lucas froze. Slowly looked up.

“Let’s both keep some dignity.” I stared down at him.

I waved security over. “Get him out.”

Lucas didn’t fight. Just kept turning back to look at me. Eyes hollow. Empty.

I don’t know what the hell he was thinking.

Always lurking wherever I could see him. Watching.

“Thanks for handling this, counselor.”

“Should’ve listened to you from the start. Gone all the way.”

A month later-trial day. Evidence airtight. He confessed on the stand.

Bigamy. Embezzlement. Seven years.

My lawyer said Lucas walked in wearing prison orange, eyes scanning the crowd. Hope flared, then died.

Two weeks after that, Emily told me Jasmine bled out at the hospital. Didn’t make it.

I was quiet for a moment. “Got it.”

Emily hesitated.

“Luke got sent to an orphanage.”

“Mrs. Winston, do you want to-”

I glanced up sharply. She caught on immediately. Walked out.

Lucas’s mom was too sick to raise a kid. No other family. Orphanage was the best place for him.

I went once.

Orphanage yard. Kids playing on rusty slides.

Chapter 9

Luke crouched in the corner, dragging a stick through the dirt. He’d grown a little. But he was thinner. Had a scabbed over cut on his face

He looked up. Saw me.

Something lit up in his eyes.

I stood outside the gate. Didn’t go in.

He got up slowly. Walked over. Small hands gripped the bars.

“…Mommy.” His voice was tiny. Uncertain.

I didn’t respond.

Luke’s eyes turned red. He started crying.

“Mommy… please take me home. I’ll be good…”

I pushed a bag through the gap in the gate.

New clothes. Snacks. A bank card with enough money to get him through life-college, marriage, all of it.

“PIN is your birthday,” I said.

He took the bag. Tears streamed down his face. “Mommy… you don’t want me anymore?”

I looked at him one last time.

“Luke,” I said. “I’m not your mom. Not since the day you chose someone else.”

I turned around.

He screamed behind me. Sobbed so hard it tore through the air.

I didn’t look back.

Sat in my car for a long time. Waited until the sun set. Drove home.

In the rearview mirror, the orphanage shrank smaller and smaller. Finally disappeared around the corner.

Winter came early this year. First snow fell the day my new company landed its first international deal.

At the celebration, Benson raised his glass. “Mrs. Winston, what’s next?”

I clinked glasses with him. Wine swirled against the sides.
