Chapter 8
Chapter 8
I looked back down at my work. Didn’t even notice when he left.
A week later, my lawyer called.
Lucas’s assets? All transferred to me now.
Every penny he spent on Jasmine during our marriage-recovered. That downtown penthouse? Mine.
1 authorized the sale immediately. Keeping it would’ve made my skin crawl.
Next few days, my office turned into a flower shop.
“Mrs. Winston, want me to toss these?”
I plucked a petal. “Why? Someone paid for them. Give them to whoever wants them. No point wasting money.”
Few days after that, Lucas showed up at my office again.
Eyes red, face twisted in pain. Forced a smile anyway.
“Chloe. I fucked up.”
“We loved each other. How did it come to this?”
I took off my glasses. Rubbed my eyes. Touched his rough cheek. Met his gaze.
“Does it matter why?”
“Maybe we just ran out of time.”
We both know how we spent those ten years. What we did to each other.
Cause and effect. Effect and cause.
No point explaining.
“You’re about to be a dad twice over. Still own half the company. Got yourself a younger wife. People would kill for your life. If I were you? I’d count my blessings. Go home. Treat Jasmine right.”
I meant it.
Lucas’s eyes fluttered shut. Grabbed my hand. Mouth opened-nothing came out.
Emily knocked. “Mrs. Winston, Jasmine’s here.”
I pulled my hand back. Told Lucas to take her home and stop bothering me,
He held on tighter. Turned to Emily.
“Tell her to get lost.”
Emily looked at me, conflicted. I tilted my head toward the door. She left.

Chapter 8
Lucas kept rambling about the past. How good we had it.
Eyes watering. Voice cracking.
“Babe, one more chance. Let’s remarry. I can’t lose you.”
“Luke needs you.”
My patience ran out. I slapped him hard.
“Lucas. Leave. Or I’m calling the cops.”
He didn’t flinch. Leaned in closer.
“Yes. Chloe. Hit me. Hit me back.”
I slapped him twice more.
Had to return the favor from last time.
Lucas spat blood. Dropped to his knees.
Shouting outside.
“Miss Miller, you can’t go in there.”
“Chloe Winston, you shameless bitch! That’s MY house!”
BANG.
