Seeing how serious she looked, Lucas suddenly wondered if he had said too much too soon.
“Do you really want to know?” he asked.
“Of course I do,” Aurora replied firmly. “Are you still planning to hide things from me? After everything we’ve been through, how much longer do you intend to keep secrets?”
Her words left Lucas helpless. She was right, they’d already been through so much together. What was left that she shouldn’t know?
He sighed, sat up, and drew her close, letting her rest against his shoulder. Then, slowly, he began to recall the first time he saw her again.
“I knew you were coming back from Westbridge. You were chasing Joseph then, and when he broke your heart, you decided to return.”
“You even knew about that?” Aurora’s eyes widened in surprise. She had always thought only her family knew those details.
She hadn’t expected Lucas to recount them so precisely. The thought unsettled her.
“Of course I knew,” he said simply. “I’ve been keeping an eye on you all along.”
“Wait… so, you’ve known who I was since high school?”
Lucas gave her a small smile. “You really underestimate me. I started liking you back then. Of course I had to keep track of the person I liked.”
Aurora realized how foolish her question sounded and gave a faint, embarrassed laugh.
“Then what about you and Megan? Were you two working together?”
Aurora could feel her heart pounding violently, almost leaping into her throat.
She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to calm the rapid rhythm echoing in her ears. In the stillness of the room, she almost worried he might hear it.
Lucas chuckled softly, the sound deep and rich from his chest. “Rora, you’re really adorable.”
Her face instantly flushed crimson.
She jerked back from his arms, covering her cheeks with her cool hands in a desperate attempt to bring down the heat. “It’s the middle of the night—what nonsense are you spouting now?”
“I’m only telling the truth,” he said with a helpless smile, watching her retreat. A hint of reluctance flickered in his eyes.
