Sabrina’s gentle voice came through the phone. “My mother was hospitalized recently. I just got back from visiting her.”

Vanessa’s tone immediately softened with concern. “Oh no! Your mom really needs to take good care of herself, otherwise you will worry so much.”

Sabrina responded with a warm laugh, “Thank you for your concern, Vanessa.”

Scarlett stood frozen outside the door, feeling her heart sink deeper with each passing moment. A chilling cold seemed to seep into her bones. Though it was only autumn, she felt as if she had fallen into an icy abyss.

After a moment’s hesitation, she clenched her teeth and pushed the door open.

As the door swung inward, Vanessa immediately turned to look. When she saw Scarlett, her eyes widened nervously and she quickly explained, “Mom, I’m just helping Dad with his video meeting.”

Scarlett glanced at Vanessa, her gaze as cold as ice.

She had always taught Vanessa the importance of honesty, and Vanessa had repeatedly promised never to lie.

Yet now, the lies flowed so effortlessly from her lips.

The precious rose she had nurtured with such care seemed to have withered after all.

Her heart ached intensely, but she found she no longer had the energy to intervene.

If Vincent didn’t care, why should she bother?

Scarlett simply responded with a noncommittal, “Mm.”

Vincent sat at his desk with Vanessa perched on his lap, holding his phone while video chatting with Sabrina. When Scarlett entered, Vanessa quickly placed the phone face-down on the desk.

As for Vincent, he remained completely absorbed in his computer, seemingly engrossed in his work.

After her brief acknowledgment, Scarlett moved toward the vanity to retrieve her skincare products.

But when she opened the drawer, she discovered all her belongings were gone. In their place sat a brand-new set of products from a luxury brand she had never used before.

Scarlett’s fingers lingered on the drawer handle for a moment before she let out a bitter, silent laugh. Closing the drawer quietly, she turned and left the room without another word.

She had forgotten-Ravenshade Villa was no longer her domain. Why would Vincent’s room still contain any of her possessions?

Seeing Scarlett preparing to leave without further comment, Vanessa called out anxiously, “Mom, I’ll come back to our room as soon as Dad finishes his meeting.”

Scarlett heard her but only offered another quiet, “Mm.”

She nearly added, “Don’t bother coming back at all,” but swallowed the words before they could

escape.

As she exited, she gently closed the door behind her. Almost immediately, Vanessa’s cheerful voice carried through the door. “Sabrina, have you been crying?”

“Don’t worry, Vanessa. I haven’t been crying.” Sabrina’s gentle reply followed.

Vanessa’s voice softened. “You need to make sure you get plenty of rest. And please tell your mom that she needs to take good care of herself. When she’s feeling better, Dad and I will visit her. I’d love for her to cook something delicious for me.”

Sabrina’s voice sounded slightly choked. “Vanessa, whatever you’d like to eat, she would be happy to make it for you.”

Vanessa laughed brightly. “I’m not picky at all! I’ll eat anything she prepares.”

Scarlett stood motionless outside the door, every word between the two etching itself painfully into her consciousness. Vanessa’s affectionate remarks felt like knives twisting in her heart.

Back at Theron Manor, Vanessa had always been such a picky eater. Yet with Sabrina, she presented herself as the most accommodating child.

Scarlett felt the urge to cry, but found herself unable to produce any tears.

The daughter she had nearly died bringing into this world seemed determined to drain what little life she had left.

Scarlett couldn’t quite recall how she made it back to her room, or how she ended up lying on

the sofa.

She lay on her side in the darkness, staring blankly into nothingness, completely lost in her thoughts.

She had no concept of how much time had passed before Vanessa finally returned.

“Mom?” Vanessa called out softly as she entered the dimly lit room.

Scarlett emerged from her trance and responded coolly, “Mm.”

Following the sound of Scarlett’s voice, Vanessa settled onto the sofa beside Scarlett.

“Mom, how has Grandma been lately?”

Though Vanessa had suddenly brought up her grandmother, Scarlett felt no joy at the question. She knew Vanessa had likely only thought of her own grandmother because of Sabrina’s mention of her mother.

Scarlett’s reply was flat and emotionless, her voice cold. “She’s fine.”

Hearing this, Vanessa snuggled closer, resting her head against Scarlett’s shoulder. “Mom, I want to go visit Grandma.”

Scarlett didn’t know what genuine feelings might underlie Vanessa’s request, but she couldn’t bring herself to agree.

Without much consideration, she refused, “There’s no need. You have kindergarten to attend. Your studies come first.”

Vanessa thought for a moment before proposing a compromise, “Then during winter break, I’ll go

with you to Theron Manor to visit Grandma. We could even spend New Year’s there.”

New Year’s?

The idea would likely thrill Diana beyond measure.

But Vanessa had never shown particular fondness for anyone in the Theron family. Her presence would likely only create tension and disruption at Theron Manor.

Scarlett avoided giving a definite answer, merely stating, “We’ll see when the time comes.”

Children were notoriously changeable. What she wanted now might be completely different later.

Besides, in Vanessa’s heart, didn’t Sabrina already hold the most important position?

Growing tired of lying in one position, Vanessa curled up in Scarlett’s arms and began playing with Scarlett’s fingers. “Mom,” she asked curiously, “does Grandma make good food?”
