Chapter 159 A Different Side
In the main dining area, after learning that Thomas had met with Vincent’s group, Nolan proactively summoned the server and asked for the menu.
Since Thomas had another engagement, he and Scarlett still needed to eat.
Firushed
Just as their dishes arrived at the table, Thomas emerged from the private room, briefcase in hand.
Walking over and seeing Scarlett and Nolan about to start their meal, he couldn’t resist teasing them. “What’s this? The supporting actors start eating before the lead arrives?”
Hearing his voice, both Scarlett and Nolan instinctively stood up. “Dr. Newman,” they said in unison.
Thomas didn’t stand on ceremony. He placed his briefcase on an empty chair and settled comfortably beside Nolan. After sitting, he removed his jacket and wristwatch, placing them nearby as if preparing for a proper meal.
Seeing that Thomas evidently hadn’t stayed to eat with Vincent’s group, Nolan pushed the menu toward him. “Dr. Newman, please order a couple more dishes.”
Just as Thomas took the menu, Scarlett gently interrupted, “Dr. Newman, Nolan, perhaps we should move to a private room?”
The restaurant was upscale, but it still had its share of random patrons. Neither Scarlett nor Nolan wanted to slight someone of Thomas’ stature.
“Dr. Newman, would you mind moving to the private room?” Nolan chimed in promptly after Scarlett’s reminder.
Noting their concern, Thomas pressed the menu down onto the table, his tone sharp yet earnest. “No. We’ll eat right here in the main hall. You young people should save where you can. Besides, we’re conducting ourselves properly and have no need to avoid anyone.”
His words carried an implicit meaning. Scarlett and Nolan exchanged a glance, both understanding perfectly well what he meant. Since Thomas had made himself clear, they didn’t press further.
Soon, the two additional dishes Thomas ordered arrived-both vegetarian selections.
Scarlett glanced at Nolan, concerned they might be shortchanging Thomas.
Thomas noticed their unease. “I’m getting older. Less greasy, meaty food, more greens and simple fare-that’s the way to good health.”

Nolan smiled. “You are right. I’ll take that advice.”
Thomas looked
up and shot Nolan a mock-stern glance. “Still such a smooth talker.”

Nolan responded with a faint smile and glanced toward Scarlett. Noticing she hadn’t started eating, he served some food onto her plate. “Scarlett, try the food here. It’s quite good.”
Scarlett nodded. “Thank you, Nolan.”
After tasting a bite, she found it genuinely delicious and ended up eating several more mouthfuls.
Throughout the meal, Nolan consistently looked after Scarlett-serving her dishes, filling her bowl with
soup and rice.
Thomas watched this with quiet amusement.
When they were almost finished, Thomas set down his fork. Pointing at Nolan, he asked Scarlett directly, “You know why Nolan invited me to dinner, right?”
Hearing his question, Scarlett quickly set down her utensils and dabbed the corner of her mouth. She glanced at Nolan before looking back at Thomas and shaking her head. “Dr. Newman, I’m a bit slow. Please enlighten me.”
Thomas was blunt. “The exams are coming up. He wanted me to give you some encouragement.”
Scarlett smiled faintly. “Dr. Newman, I’m confident.”
Seeing her self-assured expression, Thomas nodded approvingly. Then he continued, “Let me tell
you, this Nolan is a good one. All these years studying medicine, he’s endured the solitude. Not a single woman by his side, hardly any friends either. For those research datasets, he’d spend whole days buried in the lab, never seeming to tire. Of all the students I’ve mentored, he’s the only one I’ve had to force to take a break.”
Puffing out his chest proudly, he went on, “Luckily, heaven didn’t waste his efforts. He’s the talent who identified a new pathology in neurosurgery and developed targeted treatment drugs. Not to mention he holds the patents. In neurosurgery, if he claims second place, no one dares call themselves first. Among all the students I’ve taught, he’s the only one with such good character, proper looks, a stable private life, and such great achievements.”
Listening to Thomas praise Nolan, Scarlett couldn’t help but glance at him. She said to Thomas, “Dr. Newman, Nolan really is a very good person.”
Thomas, shedding his usual sternness, softened his tone. “He sure is-so if he’s that good, you’d better snap him up quick!”

Scarlett naturally understood the implication, but she didn’t know how to politely decline Thomas’ well-meaning hint. She lowered her head slightly.
Nolan, seeing her discomfort, hurried to intervene. “Dr. Newman, don’t you always tell us that the biggest mistake in medicine is not being fully committed?”
Thomas then turned to Nolan. His brows were stern, but his eyes held kindness. “Those words are for people whose hearts aren’t truly in medicine. I can see you both are dedicated, so there’s no need to be bound by those rigid rules.”
