Before Scarlett could respond to reassure Clara, the door was already pushing open. Clara stepped inside, her small face etched with concern.
Scarlett quickly sat up in bed, leaning back against the headboard as she offered Clara a reassuring smile. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Clara’s brows were knitted together. “Auntie, are you okay? I heard a noise.”
Beneath the covers, Damian lay pressed against her, his body radiating heat. Scarlett could feel his hand moving restlessly along her leg, but she didn’t dare react, forced to endure his wandering touch.
“Clara, I’m fine,” she said, keeping her voice even. “I just twisted my ankle a little, that’s all.”
Clara’s eyes widened with concern. “Let me see!”
She began moving toward the bed, but Scarlett stopped her quickly. “Clara, remember I’m a doctor. I know how to take care of it. Really, I’m okay.”
The little girl hesitated, uncertainty clouding her features. “Should I go tell Dad and Mom then?”
Scarlett felt sweat dampening her palms. “No, honey, I just want to sleep now. Let’s not bother them, okay?”
Clara thought about this for a long moment before finally nodding. “Alright…”
Just as Scarlett began to relax, Damian shifted beneath the covers again.
Clara’s eyes caught the large bulge beside Scarlett. “Auntie,” she asked, curiosity piqued, “what’s that big lump next to you?”
Scarlett reached out and patted the raised portion of the duvet casually. “It’s just my big stuffed toy.”
Clara looked even more intrigued. “What kind of toy? It looks as big as a person!”
“It’s a special custom-made one,” Scarlett explained smoothly. “I need to hug it to sleep, otherwise I can’t fall asleep properly.”
Clara nodded, though she still seemed only half-convinced. “Oh… okay. Well, if you’re really fine, Auntie, I’ll go back to bed now.”
Scarlett maintained her smile. “Goodnight, Clara. Sleep well.”

“Goodnight, Auntie.”

After Clara left, closing the door behind her, Scarlett finally let out the breath she’d been holding. She patted her chest lightly, taking several deep breaths to calm her racing heart.
Under the covers, Damian’s hand continued its exploration.
Scarlett gave a slight kick. “Damian, what do you think you’re doing?”
He emerged from beneath the duvet, looking up at her with that familiar glint in his eyes. “Just admiring the view, baby.”
Scarlett threw the covers off completely and stood barefoot on the floor, glaring at him angrily. “You’re unbelievable! Get out of here right now!”
Seeing she was genuinely upset, Damian slowly sat up in bed. He moved to the edge and brought his face close to hers. “If you’re mad, go ahead and hit me then.”
His clothes were disheveled, his posture deliberately provocative as he presented himself to her.
Looking at his infuriating expression, Scarlett couldn’t resist the impulse-she slapped his cheek.
Instead of getting angry, Damian’s smile only widened. “You know what they say-hits show affection, scolding shows love. Since you love me so much, I should treat you even better.”
Scarlett had always known Damian was a flirt, but she’d never imagined he could be this shameless. For a long moment, she was at a complete loss for words.
Remembering Nolan’s coat still waiting to be cleaned, she changed the subject. “Damian, I need to go wash something. You should leave now.”
The smile vanished from his face. “Wash what?”
Scarlett frowned at him. “That’s none of your business.”
She moved toward the sofa to retrieve Nolan’s coat, but as she turned around, Damian was already in front of her, snatching the garment from her hands. “Your hands aren’t meant for washing some other man’s dirty clothes.”
His expression had turned cold as he threw Nolan’s coat onto the floor. Now it was his turn to be angry.
Scarlett stared at him, furious and annoyed. “You!”

Before she could finish, Damian looked at her with unusual seriousness. “Scarlett,” he declared possessively, “from now on, don’t let Nolan touch your waist. You’re mine.”
Scarlett studied his face, trying to discern whether he was being sincere or just playing games. The confusion must have shown on her face.
After a moment’s hesitation, she told him quietly, “Damian, I’m a woman who’s been married and has a child.”
Call it pride or self-preservation, but she didn’t want him entertaining any illusions about her. Even if he wasn’t, she felt she needed to say it.
Damian simply shrugged, his expression unchanged. “So? What does that change?”
Scarlett tried to avoid his intense gaze. She could never read him properly, never figure out what he was really thinking.
“I’m not some young girl anymore,” she said finally. “Don’t make me the target of your jokes.”
Damian had too many women in his life. Scarlett knew her place-how could someone like him possibly be genuinely interested in someone like her?
She bent down to pick up Nolan’s coat and made to move toward the bathroom. But as she passed Damian, his hand shot out and caught her arm. “Scarlett,” he said, his voice low and serious, “I’ve never been joking with you when I say things like that.”
