Chapter 165 Stolen Affection

Vanessa’s medication was still at Ravenshade Villa-something Scarlett had completely forgotten when they left earlier.

Since Vanessa was complaining of a stomachache, going back to get the medicine seemed like the logical thing to do.

Seeing Vanessa visibly uncomfortable, Xavier didn’t try to keep them any longer and urged Scarlett to take Vanessa home right away.

The whole drive back, Scarlett pressed the accelerator harder than usual, her nerves tightening with every whimper of pain from the back seat.

But the moment they pulled into Ravenshade Villa, Vanessa’s discomfort seemed to vanish into thin air. She hopped out of the car on her own, backpack slung over her shoulder, and announced brightly, “Mom, I’ll go in by myself. I’ll ask Lily to get my medicine. You can go back

now.”

For a moment, Scarlett just stood there, completely bewildered.

It was clear now-her daughter hadn’t been in pain at all. So why the act?

Watching Vanessa skip cheerfully toward the entrance, backpack bouncing, Scarlett felt a sharp tug of suspicion. Something wasn’t right.

Quietly, she stepped out of the car and followed Vanessa inside, moving softly so as not to be noticed.

She had to know what had made Vanessa lie yet again.

Scarlett watched as Vanessa, once inside, gripped her backpack straps and hurried eagerly toward the living room.

As she ran, the girl called out happily, “Sabrina, I’m back!”

That cheerful, excited voice sent a cold pang through Scarlett’s chest.

She moved cautiously closer, stopping just outside the doorway where she could see clearly into the room.

After handing her backpack to Lily, Vanessa ran straight to Sabrina, who had just stepped out of the kitchen. The girl wrapped her arms around Sabrina’s legs and looked up eagerly, “Sabrina, where’s Maria?”

Maria was Sabrina’s mother, who had recently been brought to stay at Ravenshade Villa.

So that was the reason Vanessa had been so eager to return.

It wasn’t that she disliked her great-grandfather-she just disliked being around Scarlett even

more.

Sabrina crouched down to Vanessa’s eye level and gently stroked her hair. “She’s in the kitchen, sweetie.”

Just as Vanessa turned to head that way, Maria emerged into the living room.

“Oh! Vanessa’s back! Come here, dear, let me get a good look at you,” Maria said warmly, crouching with open arms.

She was beaming, her expression so tender it was as if Vanessa were her own granddaughter.

Vanessa didn’t hesitate-she rushed right into Maria’s embrace, wrapping her small arms around Maria’s neck and covering her face with enthusiastic kisses and nuzzles.

“Maria, you’re finally here in Rivergate! I missed you so much since last weekend. I still want to eat that potato casserole you made me.”

The Monroe family was comfortably well-off, but Maria had always been a simple homemaker, not used to luxury. Her clothes were modest, even plain.

Yet Vanessa showed no sign of discomfort or distance-on the contrary, she was far more affectionate with Maria than she ever was with Scarlett.

Maria’s work-roughened hands gently cupped Vanessa’s face. “As long as you like it, dear, I will make you anything,” she said, her voice raspy but full of warmth.

Vanessa planted another happy kiss on Maria’s cheek. “Thank you, Maria! You’re the best!”

Just then, Vincent came down the stairs. Seeing Vanessa clinging so tightly to Maria, his expression cooled slightly. “Vanessa, come here.”

Pouting, Vanessa reluctantly let go and shuffled over to him.

Sabrina, watching from the side, noticed Vincent’s stern look and initially worried he was displeased about Maria’s presence.

But Vincent quickly cleared that up.

Once Vanessa was within reach, he looked down at her and said firmly, “Maria just had surgery. She’s not fully recovered yet. You have to be more careful around her from now on-don’t bump or jostle her. Understood?”

Vanessa nodded earnestly. “I understand, Dad.”

Sabrina let out a quiet sigh of relief.

After speaking to Vanessa, Vincent walked to the dining table, poured a glass of water, and brought it over to Maria. “Maria, have some water. From now on, please focus on resting and recovering here at Ravenshade Villa. We have staff for the cooking-just let Lily know what you’d like to eat.”

Maria accepted the glass gratefully. “Thank you so much, Vincent.”

He offered a slight smile. “It’s no trouble at all. No need to thank me.”

Vanessa slipped her hand through Vincent’s arm and grinned up at Maria. “Maria, you just rest well here. I’ll take walks with you every day after school.”

Maria’s eyes grew moist. “You’re such a good child.”

Then Sabrina came over and gently took her mother’s arm. She looked up at Vincent and asked softly, “Vincent, are you sure it’s not too much trouble?”

He shook his head with a light laugh. “Not at all. Your family is my family. You focus on your studies-Lily will take care of everything Maria needs.”

Sabrina smiled gently. “Thank you, Vincent.”

Vincent reached out and affectionately booped her nose. “Since when do you ceremony with me?”

Sabrina lowered her gaze, her cheeks instantly flushing a bright, telling crimson.
