Chapter 203 A Mother’s Instinct

How fiercely Damian had defended Scarlett before was something Harris and the others had witnessed firsthand.
But Daniel wasn’t convinced. “Even if Damian was standing up for Scarlett, it’s just a passing whim. A man like him—no matter how interested he seems-is just playing games. Sooner or later, she’ll realize she not only wronged Vincent but also chose the wrong person to rely on.”
Both Vincent and Harris remained silent in response to Daniel’s words. But what if Damian’s defense of her was genuine?
Meanwhile, Scarlett had prepared a plate of appetizers. As she handed it to Claire, she heard her friend click her tongue disapprovingly. “Scarlett, see? A man like Damian is exactly the kind you should stay away from. Always surrounded by rumors, known for being charming and smooth with women, yet capable of humiliating them in public. If you ever meet a man like that, you should run.”
Scarlett offered a faint smile. “I know.”
Though she smiled, her heart felt heavy. Damian had no prior issue with that woman, yet he suddenly targeted her.
Scarlett didn’t dare dwell on it; she was afraid Damian had acted because of her. The only explanation she could think of was that she held some value he needed.
But what does Damian want from me?
As she was lost in thought, a sharp cry came from the entrance. “Vincent! Vanessa is missing!”
The cry instantly silenced all the chatter about Damian.
Hearing Sabrina’s shout, Vincent, Daniel, and Harris immediately rushed out of the ballroom.
Scarlett heard it too. Instinctively, she dropped the plate in her hands and ran outside. Claire, seeing this, grew alarmed and followed close behind.
The group reached the garden area of the venue and split up to search for Vanessa.
Scarlett was frantic with worry, unable to tell if the moisture on her face was sweat or tears. She looked around desperately, running and calling out anxiously, “Vanessa! Where are you? Don’t scare Mommy! Answer me, please!”
She passed the playground, the pool area, but saw no sign of Vanessa. Her anxiety mounted, tears and sweat streaming down together.

Vincent also made his way to this area. Seeing Scarlett, he paused briefly.
“Have you found Vanessa?” Scarlett looked at Vincent, her voice urgent.
Vincent was equally worried. He shook his head. “Not yet.”

Scarlett grew even more frantic. She instinctively lashed out, her voice a low roar, “Vincent, if anything happens to Vanessa, I’ll never forgive you!”
She was trembling so violently her legs could barely support her.
Seeing her about to collapse, Vincent reached out to steady her. “Don’t worry, I’ve got security looking. She should be fine.”
Scarlett struggled against his hold. When she couldn’t break free, she went limp, just standing there, but her treacherous tears kept falling. She scanned the area, desperate to catch sight of that familiar little figure.
But wherever she looked, there was no sign of Vanessa.
Just then, barks came from the side, followed by a crying, pleading voice. “Waaah… Mommy… Mommy, save me…”
Scarlett recognized the voice instantly. It was Vanessa’s.
A mother’s instinct kicked in. Strength surged through her weakened body in an instant. Without a second thought, she sprinted toward the source of the sound. Somehow, she ran even faster than Vincent.
Dashing past the hedges near the pool, Scarlett saw Vanessa running toward her, chased by a medium-sized dog that was barking ferociously.
Ignoring the danger, Scarlett ran toward Vanessa and the dog. As she ran, she tried to calm her daughter, “Vanessa, don’t be afraid! Come to Mommy! I’m here! Mommy won’t let anything happen to you!”
Vanessa saw Scarlett and ran toward her, but the dog caught up, sinking its teeth into Vanessa’s leg.
Once the dog had a hold of Vanessa’s calf, it refused to let go.
Seeing this, Scarlett’s mind went blank. But a mysterious, powerful maternal force took over. She lunged forward and grabbed the dog’s neck with her bare hands.
Vanessa lay on the ground, crying and screaming.
Scarlett used all her strength to choke the dog, but it wouldn’t release its grip. Seeing blood

Finally, the dog released Vanessa’s leg but turned and bit down hard on Scarlett’s arm several times.
Freed, Vanessa scrambled up and ran to Vincent. “Daddy, hold me! Daddy, hold me!” Her voice shook with fear.
Vincent didn’t stop to help Scarlett—instead, he knelt down, lifted Vanessa into his arms, and soothed her gently, “It’s okay now, sweetie. Daddy’s right here.”
Just then, Sabrina, Daniel, and Harris arrived on the scene.
