He knew Scarlett had arrived at the estate after his grandfather’s fall, yet some part of him still instinctively wanted to blame her.
Recognizing how unfair that was, he fought to steady his emotions.
It took him a long moment before he could speak again, his voice rough. “You know perfectly well Grandpa would never agree to us divorcing.”
Scarlett met his gaze steadily. “Even if he doesn’t agree, we can’t keep pretending forever.”
Vincent’s eyes narrowed. “If something really happened to Grandpa because of this, could you live with yourself?”
Scarlett didn’t flinch. “If you’re so concerned about Grandpa, then do what needs to be done. Let’s get the certificate reissued and start the legal process.”
Vincent rubbed his forehead tiredly, then pulled another cigarette from the pack. He held it between his lips but didn’t light it.
“Scarlett, are you really in such a hurry to end this?”
She stood quietly in the dim hospital hallway, her voice firm. “Yes, Vincent. I stopped wanting this marriage a long time ago.”
Vincent didn’t want to question whether she meant it. He flicked his lighter, but as the flame leaped up, he let it
He looked at Scarlett, his tone flat and final. “With Grandpa’s condition now, I can’t divorce you. Not yet.”
Scarlett let out a bitter laugh. “Our divorce and Grandpa’s health are two separate things. Why are you mixing them together?”
Vincent ignored her protest. “And we need to talk about having another child.”
In the Stewart family, Xavier was the person closest to Vincent.
When he was growing up, his parents were always absorbed in their careers. It was Xavier who had played with him, taught him, been there for him.
Vincent had been raised by his grandfather–their bond was unshakable.

Right now, nothing else mattered to him. He just wanted his grandfather to leave this world without regrets.
If holding another great–grandchild was Xavier’s final wish, then Vincent was determined to fulfill it.
Hearing his selfish demand, Scarlett smiled sarcastically. “Then go ask Sabrina to have one with you.”
Vincent took a deep drag of his cigarette. Through the haze of smoke, his expression was unreadable. Then his voice came, firm and unyielding. “I’ll only have another child with you.”
His words sent a sharp pang through her heart.
Why only with her?
She knew the reason all too well.
He had watched her nearly die giving birth to Vanessa. He was afraid Sabrina might face the same risk.
And aside from Sabrina, he had no interest in other women.
Except for Scarlett–after all, from the very beginning, she had just been a convenient stand–in. A vessel.
The thought turned her stomach. Fighting back the turmoil inside, she snapped, “In your dreams.”
With that, she turned and walked away.
Vincent reached for her, but his hand closed on empty air.
He didn’t go after her.
Xavier’s fall had shattered all his plans.
It looked like everything would have to be rearranged.

By the time Scarlett returned to Theron Manor, she was so exhausted she could barely stand.
Not wanting to worry her parents, she forced herself to sit through dinner.
Afterward, she pleaded fatigue and went upstairs.

After a quick shower, she silenced her phone and collapsed into bed.
Somewhere in her drowsiness, she heard the balcony glass door slide open.

Scarlett was a light sleeper. She woke instantly.
She looked toward the balcony and saw a dark figure tumbling into her room.
A heavy thud echoed in the silent night.

Scarlett sat up. Just as she was about to get out of bed, a knock came at the door. “Scarlett? Are you okay?”
It was Nathan.
Scarlett saw that the intruder was Damian. The night breeze carried the strong smell of alcohol -he’d been drinking heavily.
Afraid Nathan would discover him, she quickly called out, “It’s nothing, Nathan! I just rolled out of bed.”
Nathan sounded doubtful, but as a man, he couldn’t just barge into her room.
“Be careful. Don’t hurt yourself,” he said gently.
“I will!” Scarlett replied, raising her voice slightly.
She waited until his footsteps faded down the hall before getting up and approaching Damian.
He had landed face down and hadn’t moved since.
Worried he was hurt, she knelt and gently shook his shoulder: “Damian?”
Hearing her voice, he slowly pushed himself up. He leaned back against the glass door, reeking of bourbon, his face flushed.
His eyes were unfocused at first, but when they landed on her, they gradually sharpened.
His voice, though, was thick with resentment, like a child who’d been unfairly wronged. “Scarlett, you liar. You’re a big, fat liar.”
