Vanessa had been attending the kindergarten for a while, yet none of the teachers or staff seemed to recognize Scarlett in connection with her.
A pang of disappointment shot through Scarlett. She was about to leave when Bianca Fairfax, Clara’s honteroom teacher, spotted her. “Clara’s aunt?” she called out, sounding surprised.
Scarlett turned and offered a polite smile. “That’s right.”
Bianca walked over. “Are you here to pick up Clara?”
Scarlett shook her head. “Actually, I wanted to ask if Vanessa Stewart has been picked up already.”
Bianca didn’t expect the question. Her brow furrowed slightly. “Vanessa? I don’t believe she came to school today.”
The words sent a jolt of unease through Scarlett. Her immediate fear was that no one had taken Vanessa to school at all.
While kindergarten attendance wasn’t the end of the world, Scarlett believed in structure and consistency. She didn’t want Vanessa picking up bad habits so early.
The worry began to settle in her stomach.
Just as she turned to go, Bianca spoke again, “Clara’s aunt?”
Scarlett looked back, confused. “Yes, Bianca?”
“I just wanted to say,” Bianca began warmly, “Clara is an absolute delight. She completes her tasks beautifully, gets along wonderfully with all her classmates–she’s like a little ray of sunshine. We all adore her. You must be so proud.”
Hearing the praise for Clara lifted Scarlett’s spirits, and she thanked Bianca sincerely.
Almost as an afterthought, she ventured, “And Vanessa? How is she doing?”
At the mention of Vanessa, Bianca’s expression shifted. A small, subconscious frown appeared.
After a careful pause, she replied, “Well… perhaps due to her home situation, Vanessa can be rather… assertive. She’s had issues with spitting at other children. We’ve addressed it with her several times, but the behavior persists. I’m afraid she hasn’t made many friends here as a result.”
A chill ran down Scarlett’s spine at Bianca’s words.

Fortunately, Bianca was needed elsewhere, and their conversation ended shortly after.
Driven by a growing sense of dread, Scarlett decided to head straight to Ravenshade Villa to check on Vanessa.
During the drive, Bianca’s assessment echoed in her mind. Spitting? No friends?
Vanessa had once been such a sweet, gentle child. What had happened?
The year before Scarlett returned to work, when Vanessa was just four, she’d been polite,. bubbly, and cheerful. Strangers at the park would often stop to compliment her cheerful demeanor and bright smile.
Now, she couldn’t even make friends. Even Clara seemed to keep her distance.
When Scarlett arrived at the villa, the main hall was quiet. Lily was busy in the kitchen, and only Maria was in the living room, lounging on the sofa watching a talk show and snacking from a bowl of chips.
Hearing the door, Maria glanced up. The moment she recognized Scarlett, open distaste flashed across her face.
Scarlett ignored her and walked directly to the kitchen.
Lily looked up, surprised. “Mrs. Stewart?”
Scarlett didn’t waste time. “Where’s Vanessa?”
“She is upstairs in her room,” Lily replied.
“Why wasn’t she in school today?” Scarlett pressed.
Lily thought for a moment. “Mr. Stewart called this morning and asked me to take her. But when I went to get her ready, Vanessa complained of a stomachache, so she stayed home.”
A terrible suspicion formed in Scarlett’s mind. Was she faking illness because she was unhappy at school? Because she was behaving poorly and felt disliked?
The thought brought a wave of sadness.
Lily noticed Scarlett’s troubled expression. She seemed to want to say more but instead asked, “Will you be staying for dinner tonight, Mrs. Stewart?”
Scarlett snapped back to the present. “Yes, please go ahead and prepare something. I’m going up to see her.”

Scarlett made her way upstairs. She paused outside Vanessa’s bedroom door, not entering immediately. She peeked quietly inside.
Vanessa was sitting on the floor by the low play table, listlessly moving a few toy figures around. There was no smile on her face, no sense of engagement in her play.
Seeing her daughter look so solitary and joyless twisted Scarlett’s heart.
After gathering herself for a moment, she gently knocked on the doorframe.
At the sound, Vanessa’s head whipped around. For a split second, her face lit up, and she almost blurted out, “Sabr-?”
But the name caught in her throat. The fleeting hope in her eyes vanished instantly, replaced by blank disappointment.
Scarlett saw it all clearly. The unguarded rejection was like a sharp, unexpected knife to her chest.
Steeling herself, she walked into the room.
She sat down on the edge of the sofa near Vanessa. Looking down at her daughter’s bowed head, she asked softly, “Vanessa, sweetheart, can you tell me why you didn’t go to school today?”
From the moment Scarlett had entered, Vanessa hadn’t looked at her directly. She hadn’t called out to her.
