Vanessa’s eyes fluttered open, heavy with sleep. When she saw Vincent, a sleepy smile spread across her face. “Daddy, you’re back.”
Vincent helped her sit up, smoothing her hair with a hand that held a trace of guilt. He kept his voice to a whisper. “Vanessa, how about Daddy takes you to see Sabrina? Would you like that?”
Hearing this, Vanessa nodded eagerly. “Yes! I’ve been so worried about her. I wanted to go see her, but Lily said it was too late.”
Vincent still hesitated, testing the waters. “What if… your mom doesn’t want you to go?”
Thinking of Scarlett’s sternness earlier, a flicker of defiance sparked in Vanessa. “It’s my choice, Daddy. I can go if I want. It doesn’t have anything to do with Mom. Besides,” she added, her lower lip jutting out slightly, “she doesn’t even care. She wouldn’t even let anyone help me with my shrimp.”
Her words settled in Vincent’s chest with an unexpected weight. But the image of Sabrina, alone and waiting in her hospital room, pushed the feeling aside. He clenched his jaw slightly and scooped Vanessa into his arms.
After helping her into a warm jacket, he carried her out into the night.
They left the house close to midnight and arrived at the hospital just after twelve–thirty.
When Vanessa pushed open the door to the private room, Sabrina was propped up in bed, scrolling through her phone. Hearing the door, she quickly set it down and turned. Seeing Vanessa, her face lit up with a wide, welcoming smile. She held out her arms. “Vanessa! Come here, sweetheart, come to me.”
Vanessa scampered across the room and launched herself into Sabrina’s embrace.
Sabrina had a white bandage wrapped around her forehead. ‘Dressed in a standard hospital gown, she looked paler and more fragile than usual.
Vanessa clung to her tightly, her eyes welling up. “Sabrina, I missed you so much. I couldn’t sleep without you.”
Sabrina held her close, stroking her hair. “I missed you too, my darling. I couldn’t sleep a wink either, without my little Vanessa here.”
Even as she said it, Sabrina had, in fact, dozed off earlier in the evening.
Her sudden request for Vanessa’s company had come after a text from Maria, warning her that Scarlett was at the house and that she should be careful not to let the mother reclaim the child’s

So, Sabrina had claimed insomnia, knowing Vincent would move mountains to grant her wish. She hadn’t expected him to actually bring Vanessa out so late.
Now, Vanessa nestled against her, seeking comfort. Sabrina cooed and murmured sweet praises until the girl’s earlier upset seemed forgotten, her mood visibly brightening.
Watching the two of them wrapped in a tight hug, whispering how much they’d missed each other, a sudden, sharp ache pierced Vincent’s chest.
The pair chatted on the hospital bed for what felt like a long time before Vincent finally spoke
his voice gentle but firm. “Vanessa, it’s time. Daddy needs to take you home.”
up,
Vanessa’s face fell. She shook her head, burrowing deeper against Sabrina. “No! I want to stay here with Sabrina.”
Vincent was about to insist when Sabrina intervened, her tone soft and pleading. “Vincent, please? Let her stay just for tonight. It would mean so much to me.”
Hearing her, Vincent wavered. After a brief internal struggle, he relented. “Alright. Just for tonight.”
After leaving Ravenshade Villa, Scarlett drove aimlessly for a while before pulling into a nearby neighborhood park.
Vanessa’s defiance, Vincent’s blatant disregard for their daughter’s wellbeing and routine–it all festered inside her like a splinter she couldn’t dislodge. She wanted to tear it out, to fix everything, but no clear path presented itself.
She sank onto a cold wooden bench, buried her face in her hands, and let the silent tears fall. She could try to numb herself to Vincent’s actions, but Vanessa was just a child. Without proper guidance, she was headed down a difficult path. And these erratic, late–night disruptions were terrible for her health.
The thoughts churned, leaving a thick, suffocating weight in her chest. The night air was chilly, but the cold inside her ran deeper.
She wasn’t sure how much time had passed when a pair of polished leather shoes came into her blurred line of sight, stopping directly in front of her.
Startled, she quickly looked up.
It was Caleb’s face looking down at her, wearing a faint, unreadable smile. There was something in that smile that, made her skin crawl.

Caleb took a casual step to the side, blocking her path. “Ms. Theron,” he said, his tone deceptively light. “It’s quite late for you to be out here alone. Do you need a ride somewhere?”
Scarlett ignored him, attempting to step around him on the other side.
As she moved past, his hand shot out, his fingers closing around her forearm.
Scarlett tried to yank her arm back, but his grip was firm. When she couldn’t break free, she leveled a cold glare at him. “I have my own car. I don’t need your performative chivalry.”
Caleb’s gaze dropped to her red–rimmed eyes. He tilted his head, a flicker of mock confusion in his expression. “You really do despise me, don’t you?”
Scarlett let out a short, bitter laugh. “What did you expect? A thank–you card?”
Caleb seemed amused by her retort. When he chuckled, faint lines crinkled at the corners of his eyes, but the humor didn’t reach their assessing gaze. “Well,” he mused, his voice dropping to a suggestive murmur, “Vincent’s clearly preoccupied with Sabrina. If you decided you wanted to… redirect your affections, I certainly wouldn’t object.”
His words were like a physical slap. Scarlett’s voice shook with a mixture of rage and disgust. “Let go of me. You’re disgusting.”
