Chapter 271 A Deliberate Provocation

She had said it deliberately–almost certainly to provoke Damian into competing with Vincent over her.
Damian understood the implication behind her words but chose to ignore it. Shoving his hands into his pockets, he flashed a cool, arrogant smile and said, “A girl as pretty as Ms. Monroe… It’s a shame she’s out of my reach. What a pity, really.”
Hearing Damian sigh like that, Sabrina almost wished she could tell him outright to fight for her.
She was growing anxious, though some things simply couldn’t be said directly.
Seeing Damian look so genuinely disappointed gave Sabrina a twisted sense of satisfaction, mixed with lingering restlessness. She ventured, “Mr. Langley, you’re charming, handsome, and talented. Actually… you’re just my type.”
Damian hadn’t expected her to be so blatant. The corner of his mouth twitched, and he replied flatly, “If the interest were mutual, it’d be different. Pity you’re with Vincent. Otherwise, I’d have loved to get to know you… much better.”
He made sure his tone was deliberately forward, almost flirtatious, thinking it would scare her off. To his surprise, Sabrina only blushed and whispered, “To be honest with you, Mr. Langley… I’m still untouched.”
After saying that, she lowered her head, her cheeks glowing like apples, looking utterly captivating.
For a moment, Damian was taken aback.
If Sabrina was telling the truth, then Vincent hadn’t been with her all this time?
But that seemed impossible.
Sabrina must have been lying.
Even though Damian tried to convince himself of this, unease still gnawed at him.
Then again… what if she wasn’t lying?
What if nothing had ever happened between her and Vincent? Would Scarlett change her mind about the divorce if she found out?
The questions swirled in Damian’s mind, stirring a quiet fear–fear that Scarlett might still have feelings for Vincent.

He’d already missed the first eight years with her. He refused to miss another eight.
This time, whatever it took–whether begging, stealing, or fighting—he would keep Scarlett by his side.
She’d been hurt once before; he wouldn’t let it happen again.
In this lifetime, Damian truly believed only he could make her happy.
Seeing Damian’s shifting expressions after her confession, Sabrina assumed he was already plotting how to win her from Vincent.
Seizing the moment, she asked proactively, “Mr. Langley, would it be too forward to ask for your number?”
Damian’s thoughts had drifted far away, but her question slowly pulled him back.
After a brief pause, he replied. “How could I refuse when my dream girl is asking?”
He took out his phone, and the two added each other on WhatsApp.
Once connected, Sabrina’s smile widened.
But Damian had lost all interest in keeping up the conversation. Coolly, he said, “I should get going. Something’s come up.”
Without waiting for a reply, he turned and walked away, not looking back.
Sabrina watched him leave so decisively and smiled to herself–he must be thinking hard about how to pursue her now.
The thought lifted her spirits, finally easing the lingering humiliation from the incident at the banquet a few nights prior.
*************
Back at Ravenshade Villa, Scarlett and Vincent returned to find Vanessa burning with fever, barely conscious.
Scarlett hurriedly gave her water, cooled her with a damp cloth, then carried her carefully downstairs.
Vincent followed, hovering anxiously, unsure what to do.
Seeing him pacing helplessly, Scarlett felt a flash of irritation.

“Vincent, would
you stop pacing? Vanessa needs a hospital. Go get the car ready.”
He didn’t argue–just nodded. “Alright.”
During the drive, Vanessa slipped in and out of awareness.

Scarlett kept calling her name, reminiscing softly about past moments, her eyes welling up.
Her once lively, smiling little girl now struggled to make friends, and it broke Scarlett’s heart.
Seeing her daughter so vulnerable and in pain felt like a personal failure–had she failed as a mother?
Before long, they pulled up at the hospital entrance. As Scarlett moved to lift Vanessa, Vincent gently touched her arm. “Let me carry her. You’ve done enough.”
Too exhausted to protest, Scarlett stepped back.
Vincent scooped Vanessa up and hurried toward the ER, with Scarlett close behind.
Inside, Vanessa was settled onto a gurney, and the doctor quickly ordered a series of blood tests.
