Chapter 297 Vincent’s Hesitation
Vincent had turned Violet’s words over in his mind all night. A quiet guilt had taken root.

“Just give her a call,” he said, his tone subdued. “Ask how she’s feeling–casually, like you’re just checking in.”
Lily understood but felt compelled to speak frankly. “Mr. Stewart, if you’re truly concerned about your wife, you should be the one to call.”
Vincent looked away, his voice low. “It’s not about concern. She’s still Vanessa’s mother. I don’t wish her ill.”
Lily sighed softly. “Mr. Stewart, your wife is a good woman. You shouldn’t let her slip away. As you said, she’s Vanessa’s mother. No one will care for the child like her own mother. If you lose that, you’ll regret it–and so will Vanessa.”
Vincent was quiet for a long moment. He thought of the divorce papers already signed, the final decree only weeks away. Finally, he said, “There’s nothing left between us.”
“But you have your daughter,” Lily pressed gently.
Vincent didn’t answer.
After a pause, he took the insulated bag from her hands. “I’ll go feed Vanessa.”
Inside the room, Vanessa stirred, rubbing her eyes sleepily.
Seeing Vincent approach with the food, she murmured, “Daddy.”
Vincent sat beside the bed and offered a small smile. “Lily made something nice for you. Let me help you get washed up, then we’ll eat, alright?”
Vanessa’s hair was tousled. She nodded.
Vincent fetched a warm washcloth from the bathroom, gently cleaning her face and hands before helping her brush her teeth.
When he tried to tie her hair, his fingers were clumsy–he managed only a simple, loose ponytail.
Then he began feeding her oatmeal, spoonful by spoonful.
As she ate, Vincent asked quietly, “Vanessa… do you miss your mom?”
At the word “mom“, Vanessa’s small face pinched. She shook her head.

Seeing her discomfort, Vincent let the subject drop.
But a moment later, Vanessa looked up. “Daddy, where’s Sabrina?”
Vincent’s smile softened. He stroked her hair. “Sabrina stayed with me to watch over you last night. She left this morning. She wanted to be here when you woke, but I told her to go on to the lab.”
Vanessa wriggled happily. “Sabrina’s so good to me. She loves me almost as much as you do, Daddy.”
Vincent simply smiled and continued feeding her, saying nothing more.
Vanessa was over the moon; the faint flush of joy finally chased the pallor from her face.
Seeing color return to his daughter’s pale cheeks, Vincent felt the white lie was justified. Sabrinal hadn’t actually stayed, but she had intended to.
Once Vanessa finished, Vincent tidied up the containers.
When he stepped out to return the bag to Lily, he paused. “Stay with Vanessa, please. I need to make a call.”
Lily nodded. “Of course.”
Before leaving the ward, Vincent stopped at the nurses‘ station to ask which unit typically handled adult cases of fever and pneumonia.
With the information in hand, he headed for the pulmonary department.
After turning it over in his mind, he decided it was right to check on Scarlett himself.
At the pulmonary nurses‘ station, he inquired about Scarlett’s room and was directed to the VIP wing.
Thanking the nurse, he made his way down the hall.
Outside Scarlett’s door, he heard a cheerful male voice–Zachary’s. “Scarlett, look–I brought you a cupcake, some fruit, and oh! Milkshake! And I picked up a few graphic novels, too. Which one do you like?”
Through the glass panel in the door, Vincent could see inside.
Scarlett was propped against the raised bed. Damian sat beside her, carefully peeling an orange. Zachary was perched near the foot of the bed, enthusiastically unpacking his gifts.

Vincent had intended to go in–but seeing two other men already there, the urge vanished.
He’d worried no one was looking after her. Clearly, he’d been mistaken.
Without another thought, he turned and walked away.
Inside the room, Scarlett watched as Zachary laid out his offerings.
After his lively presentation, he looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to choose.
Not wanting to dampen his spirits, Scarlett considered, then pointed. “The cupcake, please.”
Zachary brightened instantly, passing it to her. “Since you love cupcakes, you must be just as sweet, Scarlett.”
