He even remembered the time she burned her finger and came running to him, holding it out with tears in her eyes, saying, “Vincent, can you kiss it better?”

Back then, Vincent had just glanced up at her and replied flatly, “I’m not a doctor. Have Freya get you some ice for it.”

He might have caught the flash of disappointment in Scarlett’s eyes back then, but he hadn’t cared enough to let it bother him.

Just like now, he was the one feeling uneasy, but Scarlett couldn’t have cared less.

Watching her walk further away, Vincent couldn’t stop himself from calling out, “Scarlett, wait.”

Hearing him, she paused and half–turned to look back. “Yes?”

“Lily is bringing lunch around noon,” Vincent said. “Would you like to join us?”

“No, thank you.” Scarlett refused politely. “My lunch is already taken care of.”

With that, she turned and walked away again.

Vincent stared after her, rooted to the spot for a long moment.

A strange feeling settled in his chest–one he couldn’t quite name.

At the same time, he couldn’t help wondering–when she said her lunch was “taken care of, did she mean by Damian… or by Nolan?

That evening, Claire had an event to attend, so she left once other members of the Theron family arrived.

Violet didn’t come that night. It was Nathan who showed up, bringing dinner with him.

Since Scarlett had been admitted to the hospital, Nathan hadn’t visited once—until that night.

Having grown up together, Scarlett knew Nathan well. He was a man of few words and even fewer smiles, methodical in everything he did, with a temper that could shift unpredictably. Even though they were siblings, being alone with him still made Scarlett feel a little on edge.

She was propped up against the headboard of the hospital bed, slowly eating the dinner Nathan had brought. Nathan sat in the chair beside her, carefully peeling an orange.

When he finished, he placed the segments neatly into a small container. After wiping his hands clean, he looked over at Scarlett. “Where’s Damian?” he asked.

The day Damian had carried Scarlett out of the house, the whole family had rushed to the hospital. Once they learned Scarlett was hospitalized with a high fever, Nathan had urged their parents to go home and rest.

He had intended to ask Damian right then what he was doing at Theron Manor in the first place, but Violet had stopped him. Not only did she shut down his questions, but she also told him to leave.

Nathan understood what Violet was thinking.

So, for the past couple of days, even though he was worried about his sister, he hadn’t come to visit. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to–he was afraid that if he saw Damian, he wouldn’t be able to hold back his resentment and might end up throwing a punch.

And, of course, Violet hadn’t wanted him coming to the hospital, either.

At her brother’s question about Damian, Scarlett’s hand stilled for a second. “He went back,” she answered quietly.

Nathan let out a low, derisive sound. “Couldn’t even last two days taking care of you?”

Scarlett set her lunch container aside and picked up a piece of orange, eating it slowly. “After all, he’s a Langley,” she said, her voice soft. “He was never really one of us to begin with.”

Though Nathan’s tone was sharp, beneath it was genuine concern for Scarlett.

Hearing her reply, he looked at her with worry. “I’m not against you seeing someone, Scarlett. But finding someone stable and grounded is worth more than all the glitter and promises from those old–money families. Violet keeps telling me how wonderful Damian is, but I honestly don’t see it. He couldn’t handle looking after you for two days before taking off. How is he supposed to be there for a lifetime?”

A faint smile touched Scarlett’s lips. “Don’t worry, Nathan,” she said. “I’m not going to fall in love again so easily.”

Nathan watched Scarlett, his heart aching for her. She’d been married to Vincent for years–she must have endured more than her share of hurt.

Otherwise, someone as kind–hearted as her would never have sought a divorce.

The thought filled him with a frustrated sense of helplessness. If only he were more influential, more capable…

He managed a smile for her, though his eyes were still shadowed with pity. “For what it’s worth,

I think that Nolan is a decent guy. You’re both in medicine, your backgrounds are compatible… and if he ever gives you trouble, I could be at his door in ten minutes flat.”

Scarlett couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Nathan, Clara says she’ll support me if I stay single. What if I just don’t get married again?”

Nathan lowered the hand he’d raised demonstratively and smiled a little more genuinely. “You absolutely can.”

Truthfully, he’d prefer if his sister never remarried at all. But if she did, he’d rather it be someone like Nolan.

Mention of Clara reminded Scarlett of something. “Is Clara at home by herself?”

“She’s home packing for the weekend trip,” Nathan said. “Actually, she asked me to check if you’re still feeling up to going with her this weekend.”

It was called a fall outing, though early winter had already set in.

Remembering the promise she’d made to Clara, Scarlett nodded. “Yes, I’ll go. I promised her, so I’m not backing out now.”
