After Damian left, Scarlett found sleep impossible. She remained sitting up in the hospital bed, lost in a heavy, confused daze for what felt like hours.

She didn’t understand what he meant by saying she had “started this” or “provoked him first“. Yet, a vague, unsettling feeling tugged at her–a sense that there might have been some previous connection between them, a thread from the past she couldn’t grasp. For reasons unknown, her memory held no trace of Damian.

And what was this “promise” he kept mentioning?

Her mind churned all night after his abrupt departure. As for Vincent’s parting words about returning, they proved to be nothing more than an empty promise, a forgotten notion by the time dawn broke.

When the morning nurse came in for routine checks, Scarlett felt even more drained, any desire for rest completely gone. Seeking distraction, she picked up her phone and mindlessly scrolled through short video clips. Strangely, Sabrina’s account popped up again in her feed.

She was sure she had marked “Not Interested” before, but the algorithm pushed it to her nonetheless.

Since it was there, Scarlett watched the video to the end. It was a compilation of several clips set to a soft, melancholic piano track.

The first clip was a close–up of Sabrina’s face, her expression sad and tearful. In the blurred background, a man’s figure was visible behind her. There was no doubt it was Vincent; his hands appeared to be resting on her shoulders in what looked like a comforting massage.

The second clip showed Vincent, dressed in a plush bathrobe, walking away from the camera toward what seemed like a bathroom.

The third clip was the most suggestive–Vincent with his back to the camera, starting to shrug off the bathrobe. The video cut to black just as it revealed part of his bare shoulder.

These three clips were seamlessly edited together. The caption read, “Had a really tough day. Got my research thesis direction completely wrong and my advisor tore into me. Called you but you didn’t pick up. Yet when I texted saying I was feeling low, you replied instantly and said you’d come right over. Seeing you standing there made me want to cry even more. But when you said, ‘Don’t cry, I somehow calmed down. You said you’d take my mind off things. Didn’t expect it to be this… but I really love how you show you care instead of just talking about it.”

As Scarlett watched, she unconsciously analyzed each frame. The conclusion she drew was stark -Vincent had spent the night comforting the “unhappy” Sabrina in the most intimate way possible.

A cold, hollow feeling settled in her chest. She switched off her phone screen and set it aside.

Thinking of Vincent’s words from the night before, “I’ll come back later,” she almost laughed out loud. It was pathetic, really.

The moment Sabrina signaled her distress, he had rushed to her side without a second thought.

As for his wife lying sick in a hospital bed? That was likely the last thing on his mind.

Making her way to the pediatric VIP wing, she hadn’t yet located Vanessa’s room when she heard her excited voice echo down the hall. “Maria! I missed you so much!”

Scarlett’s steps faltered. She didn’t catch Maria’s reply, but she continued walking toward the sound.

Standing outside the door, she hesitated, her hand pausing before it could knock. She thought she might just peek in. Seeing that Vanessa was okay would be enough to ease her mind.

Through the small window in the door, she saw Maria sitting by Vanessa’s bedside, feeding her breakfast.

At first, it looked normal. Then Scarlett’s blood ran cold. She watched in disbelief as Maria took a spoonful of food, put it into her own mouth, chewed it thoroughly, and then–with the same spoon–held it back out to Vanessa’s lips.

Maria was cooing gently, “Here you go, sweetheart. Eat what I made for you. It’ll make you all better.”

Scarlett’s stomach turned. She assumed Vanessa would instinctively refuse such a thing.

To her horror, Vanessa obediently opened her mouth.

As the pre–chewed spoonful of food was about to enter her daughter’s mouth, Scarlett’s composure shattered. She shoved the door open, the handle hitting the wall with a bang.

“Vanessa, don’t!” she cried out, her voice sharp with panic.

Vanessa jumped, startled, and stared wide–eyed at her mother storming into the room.

Without a word, Scarlett marched up to Maria and swatted the bowl of oatmeal from her hands. It clattered to the floor, splattering its contents all over Maria’s clothes and the tiles.

Maria finally snapped out of her shock. She grabbed a handful of napkins, dabbing frantically at her soiled sweater. “Disgusting?” she retorted, her own temper rising. “What’s so disgusting about it? I raised both Caleb and Sabrina this way! It’s perfectly normal!”

Scarlett, who was rarely this openly angry, didn’t hold back. “Then it’s no wonder Caleb and Sabrina turned out as inconsiderate and entitled as they are!”

That ignited Maria’s temper fully. She shot to her feet, pointing a finger at Scarlett. “How.dare you speak about my children that way! I got up at six this morning to make this homemade breakfast. Not only do you waste it, but you insult my son and daughter? Scarlett, what have I ever done to deserve this from you?”

Just as her last words hung in the charged air, the ward door was pushed open from the hallway.
