He could make that promise so casually, but she was the one who would have to return here every single day.
Just the thought of it made Scarlett feel as if a heavy stone were lodged in her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Vincent understood her turmoil perfectly, but to avoid arousing Xavier’s suspicion, he quickly called out in a commanding voice, “Maria!”
At that moment, Maria was still in the kitchen, painstakingly mincing lamb for the mousse, the green beans still waiting to be prepped. Hearing the summons, she instinctively replied, “Coming!”
She hurried into the living room, wiping her hands on her apron. Vincent instructed her without preamble, “Go upstairs and inform the tutor she may leave for the evening.”
Tutor? Maria hadn’t been aware of any tutor. Confused, she let out a puzzled, “Hmm?”
Seeing her bewilderment, Vincent clarified, “Tell Ms. Monroe she is dismissed for the night.”
Finally understanding, Maria nodded. But a fresh wave of resentment washed over her. She was treated as a mere maid, and her daughter was relegated to the role of a “tutor“…
Yet, in this moment, she had no right to object. She simply nodded again. “Right away, Mr.
Stewart.”
As Maria headed upstairs, Xavier couldn’t help but comment, “That maid seems a bit dim. If she’s not competent, you should simply replace her.”
Before Scarlett could even form a response, Vincent interjected smoothly, “Maria prepares an excellent breakfast. I’ve grown accustomed to her cooking. It’s best to keep her on.”
Xavier didn’t press the issue. He stifled a yawn, patting his mouth. “Very well. I’m off to rest. You two should retire as well.”
“Goodnight, Grandfather,” Vincent said.
Scarlett merely stood in silence, offering no farewell.
Xavier noted her continued quietness but, after a moment’s thought, chose not to remark on it.

After being summoned downstairs, Sabrina and Maria left Ravenshade Villa together.

Standing on the curb in the chilly night air, Sabrina looked utterly drained. Her days were spent on grueling research at the university, and her nights were devoted to caring for Vanessa at the villa.
The thought of her relentless routine brought her close to tears. Here she was, a young, unmarried woman, living the life of a domestic caretaker.
Maria, for her part, had been muttering complaints under her breath the entire way out. Even now, she couldn’t stop. “That woman is insane! Who demands a pâté–stuffed haricot vert at this hour? It’s pure malice!”
They both knew it was a calculated power play, but with Xavier present, they’d had no choice but to comply. Now, safely outside, their frustration boiled over.
Seeing Maria’s genuine anger, Sabrina tried to soothe her. “Mom, don’t let it get to you. Petty stunts are all she’s capable of.”
Maria finally took a steadying breath, though her words were gritted out between her teeth. “Mark my words, one day I’ll see that woman crying as she’s thrown out of Ravenshade Villa for good.”
Sabrina was taken aback by the venom. She stepped closer and patted Maria’s back. “Mom, honestly, whether Scarlett leaves or not… my situation isn’t so bad. If Vincent finalizes the divorce, I’ll marry him properly. If he doesn’t… well, I’ll remain his…”
She left the sentence hanging, but the implication was clear to them both.
Maria looked at her daughter’s weary face, her heart aching with pity. “Look at how exhausted you are. When you get home, turn your phone off immediately. That ungrateful little girl won’t be able to bother you. She’s as vexing as a stubborn mule.”
Sabrina managed a tired smile. “Okay, Mom. I will.”

Back inside Ravenshade Villa, after Sabrina’s departure, Vincent made his way upstairs.
He found Vanessa in her room, lying on her bed and carefully applying glitter stickers to a sketchbook.
Hearing footsteps, she called out hopefully, “Sabrina?”
But when she saw it was Vincent, her bright smile faded. “Daddy, where’s Sabrina? Didn’t she come up with you?”
Vincent sat on the edge of her bed, gently smoothing her hair. “Great–Grandfather is going to

be staying with us for a while. Because of that, Sabrina won’t be able to stay overnight anymore.”
Vanessa looked at him with confused, wide eyes. “Why not?”

Vincent didn’t offer a lengthy explanation. “Great–Grandfather will be living here. For now, it’s best if Sabrina doesn’t stay over.”
At this, Vanessa’s eyes instantly welled with tears. “But Daddy… how long is Great–Grandfather staying?”
Vincent considered for a moment. “It’s not certain. Perhaps a week, maybe a month… possibly longer.” Judging by Xavier’s determination, it might indeed be until the end.
Vanessa didn’t blame Xavier. Instead, her worry was more immediate. “But what if I miss Sabrina?”
Vincent was momentarily at a loss, but he rallied. “I will think of something,” he promised.
Even though he hadn’t formulated a plan, the simple fact that he had made a promise filled Vanessa with a sense of relief, and a small, trusting smile returned to her face.
