Chapter 441 The Panicked Lie

0:

Vincent got into the car. After fastening his seatbelt, he said to Sabrina, “Let it go Sabrina. I really do need to drive.”

Before she could get another word out, he ended the call.

Hearing the dial tone, Sabrina’s heart seemed to squeeze into a hard, cold knot.

In that instant, it felt as though the ground had dropped out from under her.

for now,

She clutched the blanket in her fists, her knuckles turning white. Tears streamed down her cheeks, silent and fast.

The more she cried, the heavier the sadness felt, until it was hard to breathe.

Vanessa didn’t actually have a fever. Sabrina had lied, hoping the mention of the child would bring Vincent to her side.

But even using Vanessa as a reason hadn’t worked.

She had sent Vanessa out before calling-asked her to go buy some fruit from the hospital cafeteria-so the girl wouldn’t overhear the lie.

It was only because Vanessa wasn’t in the room that Sabrina had dared to try it.

Just then, the hospital room door opened. Sabrina looked up through blurry eyes to see Maria walking in, holding a couple of shopping bags.

Seeing her mother, Sabrina’s tears fell faster.

Maria set the bags down on the bedside table and began wiping Sabrina’s cheeks. “What’s all this crying? Is the pain worse?”

Sabrina shook her head, her voice breaking pitifully. “It’s Vincent, Mom. He’s back with Scarlett. He chose her.”

Maria paused, taken aback. After a moment, she said quietly, “Sabrina, men can be fickle. You can’t tie your whole life to one man’s loyalty.”

Her words only frightened Sabrina more. “But what about me? All these years by his side, everything I’ve done-even looking after his daughter like she was my own. What was it all for?”

Maria’s heart ached for her daughter. She stroked Sabrina’s hair gently. “You still have me, sweetheart. Don’t be afraid. I’ll help you through this.”

Sabrina could hardly take in the reassurance. The tears kept coming.

Maria pulled her into a hug, speaking softly into her ear. “Listen to me. It’s going to be alright. So what if he’s been with someone else? As long as you can stomach it, it doesn’t matter who he sleeps with. Let him have his little distractions. Don’t make a scene, don’t beg, don’t lower yourself. Be the graceful one. Be patient. Men are drawn to what they can’t have. The moment you stop making him your whole world, he’ll start wondering why.”

Sabrina listened, then nodded slowly. “You mean… like how I was with Daniel? And Luke?”

“Exactly,” Maria said.

A flicker of understanding passed through Sabrina, but it was quickly overshadowed by the fear that Vincent might truly leave her for Scarlett.

Maria could see Sabrina still cared deeply. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t be crying like this.

Sure, plenty of men orbited Sabrina’s world, but she’d always looked down on most of them. She liked the attention, the chase.

But the only two who had ever really touched her heart were Vincent… and maybe Damian.

Seeing the distress still etched on her daughter’s face, Maria offered a few more comforting words.

Finally, she added, “Don’t worry. Once things settle, I’ll make sure that little girl Vanessa mentions you a few times in front of her father. He’ll remember who’s been there for him- and for his child.”

The words tasted bitter to Sabrina, but she nodded anyway. “Okay. I understand.”

After Maria’s talk, the weight in Sabrina’s chest eased slightly, though it didn’t fully lift.”

Then, a sudden thought struck her-Vanessa had been gone a long time.

A new thread of worry began to twist inside her. She looked at Maria anxiously. “Mom, did you see Vanessa on your way up?”

Maria glanced around as if noticing the absence for the first time. “No, I didn’t. She’s probably just wandering around somewhere.”

“Could you go look for her?” Sabrina asked tentatively.

Maria immediately resisted. “She’s not a toddler. She won’t get lost in a hospital.”

“But what if something happens?” Sabrina pressed, her nerves returning.

Maria’s expression cooled. “Nothing will happen. Let her play. She’ll come back when she’s bored.”

Sabrina fell silent, but the worry kept gnawing at her.

After all, Vanessa was here because of her. If anything happened to the girl on her watch, how would she ever explain it?
