Harris sat at the head of the table, with Daniel beside him. The others were scattered around

the room.

All eyes turned toward the space behind Vincent. Harris’ own eyes widened slightly in disbelief as he took in Scarlett’s presence. As for Daniel, the moment he saw her, his expression turned cold and closed off.

Vincent paid no attention to the looks around them. He took the gift box from Scarlett and handed it to Harris. “Scarlett picked this out. Happy birthday.”

Beside him, Scarlett added quietly, “Happy birthday, Harris.”

In this circle, Harris had always been one of the few who treated her with a degree of decency.

So wishing him well came easily to her.

Harris accepted the box, his voice holding a faint tremor. “Thank you, Scarlett.”

A puzzled murmur came from somewhere in the room. “I thought Ms. Monroe was the one he was with…”

Hearing the remark, Vincent looked squarely toward the speaker. “The lady beside me has always been the one.”

Harris set the gift down on a side table, then shot a glance at Daniel.

Ever since Scarlett walked in, Daniel’s mood had visibly darkened.

Now, hearing Vincent’s open acknowledgment, his face looked stormier than ever.

Harris could sense a slow-burning anger building in Daniel.

Worried the two brothers might clash, Harris quickly raised his glass. “Come on, everyone— we’re all here together, that’s what matters. It’s my birthday. Let’s raise a glass to that.”

As he spoke, he nudged Daniel under the table, signaling him to join the toast.

Daniel seemed to snap back to the moment and reluctantly lifted his glass.

Scarlett reached for her wine glass as well.

But just as her fingers touched the stem Vincentle t

At the same time, he called toward the door, “Server-could we get a pot of water, please?”

Once the water was brought, Vincent poured a cup and handed it to Scarlett.

With a quiet smile, he said, “Drink this instead.”

This rare, attentive gesture was something she had once longed for.

Now, it almost made her want to laugh.

Holding the warm cup he’d given her, she felt nothing but a hollow, endless bitterness.

Even if she had picked up the wine, she wasn’t foolish enough to actually drink it. She would have only pretended to sip.

Her body hadn’t fully recovered, and she knew better than to touch alcohol for a while yet.

Vincent’s care for Scarlett didn’t go unnoticed around the table.

Harris and Daniel were watching especially closely.

Harris kept an eye on Daniel, noticing how his anger seemed to simmer.

Leaning closer, Harris whispered, “It’s my birthday. Do me a favor-don’t start anything.”

Daniel didn’t seem to hear him.

After the toast, Daniel-having just drained his glass-turned to Vincent and said loudly, “Vincent, I thought you were bringing Sabrina tonight. So where is she?”

Even with Scarlett sitting right beside him, Daniel asked the question anyway, showing no concern for how it might make her look in front of everyone.

Vincent’s handsome face hardened. “She injured her leg. She’s in the hospital.”

Hearing that, Daniel’s expression shifted to concern, though his tone remained pointed. “That’s serious, Vincent. You should’ve said something. We could’ve celebrated at the hospital. What’s the point of having a party if Sabrina isn’t here?”

Harris grew anxious. He tugged at Daniel’s sleeve. “Daniel, you’ve had too much to drink.”

But Daniel turned on him angrily. “What did I say that was wrong? It’s bad enough Vincent didn’t bring Sabrina, but he brings her instead. Is he trying to ruin your birthday or mine?”

Before Harris could reply, Vincent barked, “That’s enough!”

His anger was sudden and sharp. He slammed his wine glass down onto the table with such force that it shattered in his hand.

Blood instantly welled between his fingers.

The room fell silent at Vincent’s outburst.

Even Daniel and Harris, who were used to his temper, froze in shock.

They both stared at him, their faces a mix of astonishment and concern for his injured hand.

Scarlett, seated beside him, was also startled by the violence of the act. Yet her expression remained blank-no smile, no trace of anger, nothing at all.
