And the basin of water-the one Scarlett had used to clean his wound-was right there.
The water was pink with blood. Her phone dropped into it with a soft splash.
One second, the screen was lit. The next, it went dark.
Scarlett stared at the submerged phone, then looked at Damian. “You…”
He had the decency to look apologetic. Sheepish. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to. I’ll buy you a new
one.”
He said it with such a straight face. But she knew.
She met his eyes. “Damian. You did that on purpose.”
He widened his eyes innocently. “No, really. It was an accident.”
She didn’t argue. She held out her hand. “Give me your phone.”
He frowned. “Why do you need my phone?”
“To make a call.”
He shifted slightly, winced. His gaze sharpened. “You know Nolan’s number by heart?”
“No.”
Something in his expression eased. But he still looked suspicious. “Then who are you calling?”
“Violet. She has his number.”
Damian held himself up for a moment, but the pain was too much. He sank back against the pillows.
When the ache faded, he reached for his phone.
He found it and held it out to her.
She reached for it. Just as her fingers touched the case, he let go. The phone dropped into the basin.
Scarlett tried to grab it. Damian caught her hand.
Even wounded, he was stronger than her.

So she watched his phone follow hers into the water.
Once the screen went dark, Damian released her wrist. He looked satisfied.
Scarlett glared at him. “You’re insane.”
He placed a hand delicately over his chest and let out a theatrical groan. “Don’t yell at me. It makes my heart hurt.”
She rolled her eyes. “Good. You deserve it.”
She pulled on a fresh pair of gloves and fished both phones out of the basin.
Then she carried the basin to the bathroom and dumped it.
When she came back, she wiped the phones with alcohol and tucked them into her pocket.
She stood by the bed. “Your wound needs rest. Try not to move around. If the bleeding stops in a couple of days, you’ll recover fine.”
Damian opened his mouth. She cut him off. “You can have the new phones delivered to Theron Manor.”
She turned toward the door.
Then she heard it-a heavy thud behind her.
Her whole body jolted.
She spun around. Damian was on the floor. He’d fallen out of bed.
She rushed back. “How-how did you fall?”
As she helped him up, her eyes filled. Tears spilled down her cheeks.
The fresh gauze was already soaked through again.
She looked at it, then at him, her voice breaking. “Damian. Do you have a death wish?”
He lifted his pale face and met her gaze. “If you’re not here, what’s the point?”
The words caught in her chest. She swallowed. “I told you. I’m not worth this.”
He leaned into her. He had no strength left. His weight settled against her.
His voice was low, rasping. “You are. Giving my life to you-that’s worth it.”

Scarlett held him and spat quickly, “Don’t. Don’t say things like that.”
He rested his head on her shoulder. A faint smile curved his lips. Smug. Satisfied.
Maybe his efforts hadn’t been completely in vain.
His voice dropped. “Will you stay with me?”
She wanted to push him away. But he was heavy, solid. She could barely breathe.
She had no choice. She held him and said, “Okay.”
Meanwhile, downtown.
The square was packed. Christmas Eve.
Nolan hadn’t pushed his way to the center. He was still waiting for her.
He looked down at his phone. Dozens of calls. No answer.
Then the calls stopped going through. Straight to voicemail.
He kept calling anyway.
Midnight was close. Still no Scarlett.
