She asked twice. Her voice cracked further each time.

Hearing her quiet sobs, Vincent raised a hand and cradled the back of her head. His voice was soft, careful. “I’m sorry. You had to go through this alone.”
Sabrina hiccupped. “Vincent. I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”
He pulled her closer. “No. How could I?”
She pulled back slightly, searching his face. “Vincent. My father…”
He reached out and wiped the tears from her cheeks. His voice was gentle. “It’s okay. I’m here now. I’ll handle the hospital arrangements.”
She nodded firmly. “Okay.”
Her face was streaked with tears. Vincent felt the weight of his own absence. “I’m sorry. I’ve been distant the past few days.”
Sabrina shook her head. Her lips pressed together. “It’s fine. I understand. Ms. Theron is Vanessa’s biological mother.”
At the mention of Vanessa, Vincent said, “I forgot to tell you. Vanessa came with me.”
Sabrina paused. “Where is she?”
“She fell asleep on the drive. I put her down at the hotel.”
Sabrina’s expression settled. She wiped her face clean. “It’s Christmas. Why didn’t you stay at Stewart Manor with your family last night?”
Vincent looked at her-her eyes still red-rimmed, her voice fragile. “Your situation matters too.”
Sabrina was quiet for a moment. “Thank you.”
He wiped another tear from her cheek with his thumb. His voice was low. “It’s the least I could do.”
She shook her head slightly, but didn’t argue.
Seeing her distress, Vincent asked, “Does your father need surgery?”
Sabrina nodded. “I forgot to mention it. His condition requires an operation. He’s still unconscious. The doctor said we need Nolan for the procedure.”

Vincent went still.
Nolan. Again.
After a beat, he said, “Don’t worry. I’ll figure something out.”
Sabrina looked at him. “Vincent, Nolan is a skilled surgeon. He’ll help. And I’m his junior from med school.”
Vincent smiled faintly but said nothing.
He sat with her a while longer, then said, “Come on. Let’s go downstairs and wait for news about your father.”
As Sabrina stood, her fingers instinctively found his.
He noticed. He didn’t pull away. He let her hold on:
Sabrina felt the shift in him. It warmed something in her chest, but her worry for her father kept her face from softening.
As they headed downstairs, Sabrina’s phone rang. Caleb.
Vincent paused and nodded for her to answer.
She picked up. Caleb’s voice was tight with anxiety. “Sabrina. How’s Dad?”
Sabrina’s voice was low, rough. “He had a brain hemorrhage. Collapsed. He’s in the ICU now. Once he stabilizes, I’ll reach out to Nolan for the surgery.”
Caleb exhaled. “Good. I’m tied up here-can’t get away. I’ll leave Dad in your hands.”
“Okay.”
“Call me immediately if anything changes.”
She agreed and hung up.
As she put her phone away, she noticed Vincent was also looking at his.
He was staring at the screen, motionless.
Sabrina leaned in slightly. “Vincent? What are you looking at?”
He turned the screen off and slipped the phone into his pocket. “Nothing.”

If he hadn’t been so guarded, she might not have thought twice. But his obvious evasion only sharpened her suspicion.
She had caught a glimpse of the screen. She couldn’t be sure, but she could guess.
It was probably his chat history with Scarlett. And there were no messages from her.
Sabrina could feel it now-Vincent seemed to care about Scarlett.
She just didn’t know how much.
Sabrina stayed quiet. Vincent noticed. “What are you thinking?”
She shook her head, pressed her lips together. “Nothing.”

At one-thirty in the morning, the square was nearly empty.
Scarlett and Nolan sat on the steps. Neither spoke.
Time passed slowly.
Finally, Nolan turned to her. “Are you going back to Theron Manor tonight?”
