Chapter 509 A Surgeon’s Duty

Nolan answered without looking up. “It’s a holiday. I took the day off.”

Scarlett smiled, teasing. “Finally giving yourself a break?”

He slid the fried egg onto a plate, then turned to face her. His expression was serious. “I took too few breaks before. That’s why I never got the chance to hold your hand.”

Scarlett went still.

Then she said awkwardly, “Nolan. Don’t say that. I’m really not-”

He cut her off, gently. “Scarlett. I’m right here. If you ever turn around, you’ll see me.”

She looked at him. “I’m not as good as you think I am.”

He didn’t respond. His phone rang.

He glanced at the screen. An unfamiliar area code.

He answered. “Hello?”

The caller introduced himself-the chief of surgery at a hospital in Nebula City.

Nolan frowned slightly. “What’s this about?”

Scarlett didn’t try to eavesdrop. She quietly looked around the villa.

The light was good. The garden outside was peaceful. It felt like a place someone could actually live in.

When she turned back, Nolan had just hung up.

She tilted her head. “Everything okay?”

He slipped the phone into his pocket. His voice was casual. “A hospital out of town needs me for a surgery.”

Scarlett studied him. A perfectly good day off, interrupted by a call from another city. Most people would be annoyed.

Nolan just looked calm.

She smiled. “When do you leave?”

He didn’t answer her question. “Do you want to come with me to Nebula City?”

She hesitated. Then shook her head. “I need to go back to Theron Manor.”

He nodded. “Okay.”

Her wishes came first. They always did.

After breakfast, Nolan packed up to leave for Nebula City.

Scarlett left the house. Nolan hailed a cab for her.

She watched it pull away. Then Nolan hailed another for himself.

Scarlett didn’t go straight home. She stopped at a mall first.

She bought a new phone, reactivated her SIM card, and then took a cab to Theron Manor.

As she approached the gates, her chest tightened. A strange restlessness pressed against her ribs.

The moment she stepped through, her phone rang. Nolan.

She answered. “I’m home.”

He hummed in acknowledgment. “Scarlett.”

His tone was different. Serious. She stopped walking. “What’s wrong?”

“I just found out. The patient in Nebula City is Sabrina’s father.”

Scarlett’s body went still. Then, the next moment, she shrugged. “Oh.”

Nolan’s voice was careful. “Do you want me to do this surgery?”

She stood at the gate. The wind bit through her coat. She shivered.

A beat of silence. Then she said, “Nolan. You’re a doctor first. Then you’re my friend.”

She was telling him what mattered.

They were doctors. Saving lives came first.

In this situation, the patient had to be the priority.

Nolan was quiet on the other end. “I understand.”

Scarlett hung up and stood there, gripping her phone.

If she could, she would have told him not to go.

But she couldn’t. Because she was a doctor too.

Before she could steady herself, a bright, sweet voice called out from inside the house.

“Auntie! You’re back!”

Scarlett took a breath and looked up. A small, bundled-up figure was running toward her.

Her heart softened. She crouched down and opened her arms.

Clara crashed into her embrace.

“Auntie, I missed you so much. You’re finally home.”

Clara wrapped her little arms around Scarlett’s neck and rubbed her cheek against Scarlett’s- soft, insistent, like a kitten asking to be held.

Scarlett’s chest ached. Her eyes burned. “I’m sorry for coming home so late.”

Clara shook her head. “No, you’re not. Mommy said Auntie has very, very important things to do. She said when Auntie finishes her work, she can stay with us forever. And we can be together every day.”

Scarlett understood what Violet was doing. Clara was too young to grasp the details, but she understood this-when Auntie was done working, she would come home and never leave again.

Chapter 510 Protecting Clara

That way, the whole family would be together.

:

Scarlett stood and took Clara’s hand. They walked toward the house together.

“Clara,” Scarlett asked, “where’s your mommy?”

“Mommy went to a photo shoot.”

The house felt empty. “Where are Grandma and Grandpa?”

“They went to the park.”

“And Daddy?”

“Daddy went to the office this morning.”

Scarlett’s heart sank.

It was Christmas, and no one was home.

She looked at Clara. “Were you lonely here by yourself?”

Clara tilted her head up at her. “No. Auntie’s home now. I’m not lonely.”

Scarlett ruffled her hair. “Then Auntie will take you out for a walk, okay?”

Clara started to nod, then stopped. “Auntie. I want to go see Mommy’s shoot.”

Scarlett smiled. “Okay. I will take you.”

Clara jumped up and clapped her hands. “Thank you, Auntie! You’re the best! I love most!”

Scarlett pinched her cheek lightly. “Alright. Go get your scarf and hat. I will take you.”

Clara ran upstairs immediately.

When she came back down, she was bundled up like a small marshmallow, her boots thumping against the stairs.

Scarlett took the family car and drove to the studio Violet usually worked out of..

Violet was a model. Commercials, print, runway-she did a bit of everything. Scarlett didn’t know what today’s job was.
