Scarlett walked straight toward the door.

Vincent called out. “Scarlett.”

He took two quick steps toward her. “Where are you going?”

Her face was still. “I don’t ask you where you go. Don’t ask me. I think that’s appropriate for us now. Also-Monday. I expect you to be on time.”

She walked out without looking back.

Vincent stood there, watching the door close.

He knew he couldn’t stop her. So he didn’t try.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs for a long moment before heading up.

Vanessa was waiting at the top of the stairs. When she saw him, she hopped down. “Daddy!”

He forced a smile.

Vanessa hooked her fingers around his. “Daddy. Did you talk to Mommy? Is she going to my class with me?”

Vincent felt something twist in his chest. He stroked her hair. “Mommy had to go to the hospital. She’s busy with work. Daddy will take you.”

Vanessa’s face fell. “Oh. Okay.”

She had wanted to see if Scarlett still cared.

Scarlett didn’t seem to care at all.

She frowned. “What’s all this?”

As she spoke, she instinctively moved to stand beside Damian.

He noticed. The corner of his mouth curved up. “Nice day. Thought we’d go camping.”

Scarlett hesitated. “I don’t think I’ll go.”

Claire, standing opposite her, heard how firm and direct her refusal was. She reached out, grabbed Scarlett’s hand, and begged playfully. “Scarlett, come on.”

Claire seemed better lately. More smiles. More light in her eyes.

Two cars. Zachary and Felix driving.

Scarlett wanted to ride with Felix, but Zachary wanted Claire in his car. Claire went, so Scarlett had to go too.
