Scarlett's breathing came in heavy, uneven gasps for a few moments before she finally steadied herself.
Nolan was still watching her, his gaze soft. "Bad dream?" he asked quietly.
She lifted a hand to wipe the sweat from her forehead and nodded. "I think so."
He reached out, gently brushing a few strands of hair from her cheek. "You okay now?"
She glanced up at him, caught those handsome features, but couldn't hold his eyes—they were too warm, too tender. Instead, she looked down, and her gaze landed on his ears.
They were flushed bright red. Almost painfully red. Like they might bleed if you touched them.
It hit her then, what he might be thinking. She quickly asked, "Nolan, did we... Are we here?"
He straightened in his seat, cleared his throat. "Yeah. We're at the hotel."
She looked past him, through the windshield. The car was parked right out front.
The hotel looked upscale. The kind of place where one night would cost more than she made in a week.
She was a doctor, sure, but her income couldn't touch Nolan's. Not even close.
Thinking about it now, it almost seemed ridiculous that someone like her had ended up married to Vincent.
She shook the thought off. "Let's head in."
Nolan nodded. "Okay."
They got out. Nolan pulled her suitcase from the trunk while Scarlett just carried her gloves and hat.
At the front desk, they checked in, and Nolan handed her the key card.
They took the elevator to the fifth floor. Nolan carried her things inside.
It was late. He didn't want her running on empty. After a moment, he said, "Let's skip the night market tonight. You need rest. Tomorrow, we'll grab breakfast—there's a place nearby that does great pancakes and maple syrup, real local spot. Then we'll hit the slopes. Ski through the morning, grab lunch at one of the lodges outside the resort, then more skiing after. Around three, we'll drive back into town, check out some of the local shops, maybe hit a food truck or two. Once we've had our fill, we'll head back to Rivergate."
They only had one full day. By Monday, Scarlett needed to be back in the city to finalize things with Vincent.
The schedule was tight.
Hearing how carefully he'd planned it all, Scarlett paused for a second, then nodded. "Sounds good."
She'd known Nolan since college. He'd always been thoughtful, gentle. But now? He was even more than she remembered.
She found herself thinking that whoever ended up with him would be lucky. He was just... a really, really good person.
By the time she snapped out of it, Nolan had already left the room.
She unpacked, then headed to the bathroom to wash up.
