Upon hearing the adults’ harsh words, Vanessa immediately jumped to her feet, ready to defend herself. “You’re the disgusting ones! You’re the ones who were picked up off the street!” she shouted back.
But the parents weren’t about to be intimidated by a small child. One of them retorted sharply, “Look at you, so young and already talking back to adults. You have no manners at all. Your mother probably spends all her time primping and chasing after men-must have forgotten to teach you how to behave properly!”
The commotion at the table grew loud enough for Scarlett, seated nearby, to hear every cruel word. She stood up abruptly, strode over, and with one swift motion, knocked the washbasin clattering from the table. She fixed a cold, fierce glare on the woman who had spoken. “If you have issues with adults, settle them with adults. But how dare you drag a child into this?”
In the midst of the confrontation, Vanessa, feeling utterly humiliated and hurt, turned and ran off.
Seeing Vanessa flee, Sabrina quickly excused herself and hurried after her. “Vanessa!”
Scarlett’s imposing presence and sharp retort had silenced the critical woman, who, realizing she was in the wrong, shut her mouth and retreated.
Sabrina chased after Vanessa but soon lost sight of her. Panicked, she pulled out her phone and called
Vincent.
“Vincent, have you arrived yet? Vanessa was just verbally attacked and she ran off. I can’t find her anywhere.”
Vincent had promised to attend the parent-child event today, though he had planned to arrive a little later.
Hearing that Vanessa had been bullied, Vincent frowned “Understood. I’ll be there shortly.”
Sabrina, feeling deeply uneasy, apologized, “Vincent, I’m so sorry. I failed to protect Vanessa.”
Vincent didn’t blame her. “You have a gentle nature. I know this isn’t your fault. I’ll handle it when I get
there.”
After hanging up, Sabrina turned and saw Scarlett approaching, her face etched with worry as she called out Vanessa’s name.
At that moment, Sabrina’s finger was still bleeding from her broken nail. Though it throbbed with pain, she
couldn’t focus on her own discomfort now.
Vanessa was missing. She felt she had no way to face Vincent.
Seeing Scarlett approach, Sabrina called out cautiously, Ms. Theron.”
Scarlett looked at her with a cold, piercing gaze. “Where is Vanessa?”
Sabrina pointed vaguely in a direction. “She probably went that way.”
Without another word, Scarlett stepped past Sabrina an hurried off.
The school event was still ongoing, Clara, worried about Scarlett, asked Violet to help search for Vanessa.
Scarlett checked every classroom but found no trace of Vanessa.
Finally, she headed toward the restroom.

Just as she was about to enter, she encountered Vincent merging, carrying a sobbing Vanessa in his arms.
Vanessa had clearly been crying hard. She clung to Vincent’s shoulder, her small body still shaking with occasional sobs.
Vincent’s large hand gently rubbed her back, both comforting her and ensuring she didn’t slip from his hold.
Scarlett’s heart ached at the sight of her distressed daughter. She called out softly, “Vanessa.”
Vincent’s expression was icy, his eyes frosty and accusatory as they settled on Scarlett. The chill in his gaze felt almost suffocating.
“So this is what you call ‘having important business to attend to’?” he asked, his voice low and heavy with accusation.
His words were barely moving, yet each one carried the weight of his disappointment and anger.
Earlier, in the restroom, Vanessa had cried her heart out to him. Through her tears, Vincent had managed to piece together what had happened.
He had learned that Scarlett’s so-called “important business” was simply assisting Clara with her performance. He now understood why people had been gossiping about Vanessa, and he knew about Sabrina’s broken nail, injured while trying to stand up for Vanessa…
Scarlett guessed that Vanessa must have told Vincent everything. Yet, she refused to be intimidated by his imposing presence.
She replied calmly, “Yes, I made a promise to Clara first
Vincent saw not a trace of guilt in her demeanor-only a stubborn insistence on her own righteousness. He sneered coldly, “You truly believe you’re justified in this don’t you?”
To Vincent, Scarlett’s failure to prioritize Vanessa was an unforgivable error.
But he had no idea how emotionally numb and resigned Scarlett had become inside.
Scarlett had no desire to explain herself to Vincent. “Think whatever you wish,” she stated flatly.
Vincent felt a profound sense of disappointment. He adjusted his grip on Vanessa and made to leave. As he did, he said to Scarlett, “If you have no intention of properly caring for Vanessa, then stay out of her life from now on.”
With that, he began walking away, Vanessa in his arms, rushing past Scarlett.
Scarlett’s voice stopped him. “That suits me perfectly.”
Vincent halted, turning to glare at her. “You…”
He had spoken harshly out of anger, frustrated that Scalett seemed to care so little for Vanessa.
But he hadn’t expected Scarlett to agree so readily, so coldly.
The woman who had once cherished their daughter above all else seemed to have vanished.

Scarlett took a step forward, meeting Vincent’s gaze directly. “Since you’ve said it, let me make myself clear as well. Starting today, I will no longer involve myself in any matters concerning Vanessa.”
This wasn’t a statement made in the heat of the moment. It was a resolution she had already firmly settled
in her heart.
