Chapter 56 A Heavy Goodbye

Hearing Scarlett’s words, Vanessa lifted her tear-streaker face from Vincent’s sonder
Perhaps fearing her parents would argue, or maybe terrified Scarlet would try breadom her, Vereina called out in a small, trembling voice, “Mom.”
Scarlett’s heart ached at the sight of Vanessa. Remembering Clara’s earlier advice, she forced herself to take a step cover.
Vincent didn’t push Scarlett away as the approached, but he pointedly avoided looking at her.
Scarlett reached out and gently stroked Vanessa’s damp cheek “Vaneva, the begen, her voice w but form, I’ve told you this before-you mustn’t bully others, you shouldn’t look down on people, and you awokady cannot resort to cursing, If you make a mistake, you have to make it right. Do you understand?
Vanessa’s eyes welled up again, fresh tears tracing paths through the old ones. She nodded repeatedly, her voice choked with sobs. I understand, Mom
Scarlett carefully wiped Vanessa’s tears away and managed a gentle smile. You were very brave on that stage today, Yes, there was a small hiccup, but having the courage to perform in front of everyone already makes you more remarkable than many. People will always have opinions-both good and bad-but you must learn to believe in yourself. If your dance wasn’t perfect this time, well practice harder and do better next time. And honestly, you don’t need to pay any mind to what those unkind people said”
The more Scarlett comforted her, the more overwhelmed Vanesa felt aggrieved. Her quiet sobs escalated into heart-wrenching cries.
Scarlett tenderly ruffled her hair. “But you must always remember what I said-if you do something wrong you have to take responsibility and make amends.”
Vanessa continued nodding, though the tears seemed to have a will of their own, flowing ceaselessly.
“And from now on, Scarlett continued, her voice growing softer, “listen to your dad more, okay? If anything at school upsets you, you must tell him.”
Vincent had heard enough. He adjusted his grip on Vanessa, hoisting her a little higher in his arms, and shot Scarlett an icy glare. “I don’t need you to tell me how to care for my daughter. I am perfectly capable”
Scarlett’s words carried an unsettling finality, as if she were saying a permanent goodbye-as if she would never see Vanessa again.
For reasons he couldn’t quite articulate, a heavy, suffocating pressure settled in Vincent’s chest.
He refused to listen to another word from her. Holding Vanessa securely, he turned and strode purposefully out of the school building.
Vanessa clung desperately to his shoulder, crying and screaming, “Mom! I want my mom! Dad, put me down! I want my mom!”
Vincent paid no attention to her pleas, carrying her straight out of the kindergarten gates without a backward glance.
Scarlett stood frozen, watching Vincent and Vanessa disappear from view. Only when they were completely

She had nearly died giving birth to Vanessa. Of course she wanted nothing more than to stay with Vanessa.
But the painful reality was that Vanessa didn’t seem to ned her anymore.
Scarlett sank down, crouching in a quiet corner, and bued her face in her hands, desperately trying to mufle the sound of her weeping.
Just then, a gentle hand tapped her shoulder.
Scarlett lowered her hands and saw Violet crouching beside her. She could no longer contain her emotions and collapsed into Violet’s embrace.
“Violet,” she choked out, her voice thick with tears, “do you think I’m being a heartless mother?”
Violet held her tightly, one hand gently stroking her hair. “I’m a mother too. I know you would never make this choice if you weren’t truly and deeply disappointed
Scarlett’s voice was small, filled with guilt and self-reproach. “Maybe I’m just not fit to be a mother. I don’t want Vanessa to grow up feeling motherless, but I just don’t know how to face them anymore.”
A husband who showed her no care, a daughter who seemed to resent her-living in such a family had drained Scarlett completely.
Violet held her even tighter. “You’ve already made your choice. Don’t look back now. Letting go is the only path to your own freedom.”
Scarlett nodded weakly against her shoulder. “I know, Violet.”
Even though her mind was made up, Vanessa was still the child she had carried for nine months and nurtured. The decision was tearing her apart.
But no matter how profound the pain, she was resolved to release them.
In the back seat of the black Rolls-Royce, a heavy silence had descended.
Vanessa had cried herself out and was now quiet, save for the occasional hiccup and sniffle.
After some time, Sabrina emerged from the school and approached the car.
Vincent, adhering to habit, got out and opened the car door for her.
Sabrina’s eyes were red-rimmed. “Thank you, Vincent,” he said, her voice filled with gratitude.
Vincent offered a strained, non-committal smile in return, then walked around the vehicle and got back into his seat.
Vanessa sat between them in the spacious back seat.
Sabrina’s injured finger remained unbandaged; she had merely wrapped it in a thick wad of tissues to stem the bleeding.
She didn’t complain about the pain. Instead, as soon as he settled in, she turned to Vanessa, her expression full of remorse. “Vanessa, I am so sorry. I didn’t think things through properly. It’s my fault people said those horrible things about you.”

Vanessa’s eyes welled up again. She threw herself into Sabrina’s arms. “Sabrina, it wasn’t your fault! I was the one who messed up the dance. That’s why they were laughing at us. It’s my fault!”
Sabrina held the sobbing child close, but her eyes kept flickering nervously toward Vincent. His stony, impassive face left no doubt that he was in a profoundly dark mood.
