The moment Nolan was gone, Damian turned and leaned against the doorframe, his eyes locked on Scarlett.
There was something raw in his gaze. Accusation, maybe. Hurt. "So that's it? You're telling me no?"
Scarlett stayed calm. She met his eyes. "Come sit down. Let's talk."
She'd thought about it all night. Yes, she had feelings for him—real ones. But that didn't mean she had to act on them. Wanting something and actually taking it weren't the same thing.
Damian didn't move. He stayed right where he was, arms crossed now. "If you're about to shut me down, I don't wanna hear it."
Scarlett sighed. "Damian..."
She drew his name out, tired and patient at the same time.
He turned his head away, jaw tight. Stubborn as a kid. "Unless you're gonna say you'll marry me, don't bother."
The words hung there. Scarlett said nothing.
Neither of them spoke. The silence filled the room.

Hospital parking lot.
Vincent had just killed the engine when he spotted Harris stepping out of his car a few spaces away.
Harris noticed him too. Walked over. "Vincent."
Vincent nodded. "Hey."
Whatever tension had been between them before, they were still brothers. That never really went away.
Harris didn't waste time. "You hear about Daniel?"
"Yeah."
"I'm gonna go check on him. You wanna come?"
Vincent thought about what Amanda had shown him. The photos. The accusation. He shook his head. "I've got something I need to handle first. I'll catch up with him after."
Harris caught the shift in his expression. "What's going on?"
Vincent kept it short. "Scarlett's in the hospital. Hurt her leg. I wanna see her first."
Harris didn't hesitate. "Then I'm coming with you."
Vincent didn't argue. They walked up to the inpatient floor together and made their way down the hall toward Scarlett's room.
