Clara didn't push for more answers. She just let out a small, reluctant "Oh."
Scarlett watched as Clara polished off almost all the grapes she'd brought, then couldn't help but press her lips. "Clara, you've filled out a little again lately."
Clara deliberately turned her head away with a huff. "Even you're making fun of me now."
Seeing her get upset, Scarlett quickly tried to smooth things over. "No, sweetie, you're adorable. There's nothing chubby about you."
At this, Clara's face lit up like she'd just had a brilliant idea. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Scarlett with barely contained excitement. "Auntie, why don't you and Damian have a little baby brother or sister for me to play with?"
Scarlett blinked, caught off guard. She looked at Clara curiously. "Clara, who taught you to say something like that?"
Her first instinct was that Damian must have put the idea in Clara's head.
Clara shook her head seriously, eager to set the record straight. "Today at kindergarten, Vanessa was being mean to the other kids again. She's not nice at all, and I don't want to play with her. But if it were your baby with Damian, I'd share all my toys with them..."
Scarlett fell silent.
When she didn't respond, Clara continued, her voice full of conviction. "Auntie, if you and Damian had a little baby, I just know they'd be the sweetest, most well-behaved kid ever."
Scarlett didn't correct her. Instead, she gently stroked Clara's hair and asked softly, "Aren't you going to work on your puzzle tonight?"
At the mention of puzzles, Clara's eyes went wide with excitement. "I'm going right now, Auntie!"
And with that, she scrambled down from the bed.
Scarlett watched Clara's cheerful little figure disappear through the doorway before slowly turning her gaze back to the window.
But not long after, the bedroom door swung open again.
This time it was Diana who walked in, carrying a glass of warm milk. She crossed the room, handed it to Scarlett, and said gently, "Here, honey, have some milk before bed."
Scarlett took the glass, guilt flickering across her face. "Thanks, Mom."
All these years, she'd never really given her mother any peace of mind.
As Scarlett tilted her head back to drink, Diana studied her daughter's face, her eyes welling up before she even realized it.
"Scarlett, seeing you like this breaks my heart. How did such a wonderful girl end up in a situation like this?"
