Nathan stood there taking in Vincent's attitude, then looked at Diana—so small, so desperate, practically begging. It left a bitter taste in his mouth.
But what was done was done. There was no taking it back now.
Not long after, the squad car pulled up.
Nathan was led away in the back of one, and Vincent climbed into another.

Back at Theron Manor, in the second-floor bedroom.
Scarlett sat propped against the headboard, a magazine open in her hands, but her eyes weren't really seeing the pages.
It was already past seven, then eight, and still no sign of Diana and Henry.
Violet had finished making dinner hours ago, but they hadn't shown up.
Just as Scarlett was about to set the magazine aside, Violet walked in carrying a small tray with a steaming bowl.
"Scarlett," she said gently, setting it down on the nightstand. "I made you some bone broth. I read online that it's supposed to be good for healing fractures."
Scarlett opened her mouth to thank Violet, but before she could get the words out, her phone buzzed.
She glanced at the screen—it was Diana.
Scarlett held up a finger to Violet, then answered.
The moment the call connected, Diana's voice came through, thick with tears. "Scarlett, your brother... he's in trouble. They took him to the police station."
Scarlett's face went pale. "Mom, slow down. What happened?"
Diana's voice trembled. "Nathan hit Vincent. Vincent called the cops, and they just took him in."
Scarlett froze. For a second, her mind went completely blank.
It took her a moment to process. "Okay, Mom. I understand. Violet and I will head over right now."
She hung up, and Violet immediately asked, "What's going on?"
Scarlett looked up at her. "Nathan hit Vincent. He's been arrested."
"What?" Violet's eyes went wide with shock.
Scarlett threw off the covers and started swinging her legs out of bed. Violet rushed over to steady her, helping her into the wheelchair.
Minutes later, they were pulling out of Theron Manor, Violet behind the wheel, both of them wound tight with worry.
When they got to the station, Scarlett scanned the lobby but didn't see Diana or Henry. What she did see was Vincent, sitting on a bench, calmly giving his statement to an officer.
He looked like he was just wrapping up. The officer closed his notepad and straightened up. "Sir, are you willing to resolve this informally?"
