Awakened Housewife Ignore Betrayer's Begs (Scarlett) novel Chapter 63

Chapter 63 Foot Soak

Finished

All these years, Nolan had never forgotten the moment he first laid eyes on Scarlett-that instant, fleeting connection that had quietly taken root in his heart.

Nolan settled into the back seat of the car and called out through the open window, “You should head back inside now. Get some rest early.”

Scarlett nodded softly. “Alright, you too.”

Nolan’s smile was gentle, infused with a warmth that seemed to radiate from within. “I will.”

Scarlett remained standing there until the car’s taillights disappeared into the night before she finally turned and began making her slow way back toward the manor entrance.

Just then, a familiar figure approached and gently took her arm.

“Violet?” Scarlett stared at Violet, her eyes wide with surprise.

“Nathan asked me to come check on you,” Violet explained softly.

A wave of emotion tightened Scarlett’s throat, making her eyes glisten, “Thank you both for caring.”

“Nathan wanted me to ask… what are your true feelings about Nolan?”

Scarlett froze momentarily before responding, “Violet, I haven’t even finalized the divorce with Vincent yet. I’m really not in the right frame of mind to consider remarriage. Besides, as a divorced woman, who would truly want me? Right now, I just want to focus on my career, work toward a promotion, and maybe consider other aspects of life once the paperwork is settled.”

In this complicated world, everyone was simply trying to navigate their own path. Scarlett never claimed she would never remarry, but if she ever did consider it again, it would only be under circumstances where she maintained her independence-where she could walk away if needed.

Only then would she dare to open her heart to that possibility again.

Marriage had failed to give her the security she sought, but her career—that was something she could control.

Violet didn’t attempt to persuade her otherwise, simply offering a soft, understanding smile. “You’ve truly matured so much.”

Scarlett lowered her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper, “It’s all the disappointments over the years that have finally cleared my vision.”

Violet gave her shoulder a comforting pat and said nothing more.

Back in her room, Scarlett called Spencer.

“Scarlett, there’s a new assignment for you.” Spencer’s voice came through the line. “You’ll be heading out to the rural clinic again tomorrow.”

Scarlett was taken aback. “Why? So soon?”

Spencer’s tone was apologetic yet firm. “Orders from the management. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

Orders from the management?

Scarlett immediately understood the implication and didn’t bother arguing further.

Who else could “management” refer to but Vincent?

She had already completed a rural assignment last month. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn’t be dispatched again so quickly.

Yet here she was, being sent away again barely a month later.

Wasn’t it perfectly obvious who was pulling the strings?

Knowing resistance was futile, Scarlett simply acquiesced. “Understood.”

After ending the call, Scarlett remained seated on the edge of her bed for a long time, lost in thought.

Within the medical field, she was still just a junior doctor at the bottom of the hierarchy.

Even if she pursued a master’s degree or a PhD to expand her options, Vincent could still dictate her fate with a single word.

In this ruthlessly competitive world, power ultimately trumped everything.

Meanwhile, in Spencer’s office…

After hanging up with Scarlett, Spencer looked across his desk at Daniel and reported, “Mr. Lennox, I’ve followed your instructions precisely and assigned her to the rural posting.”

Daniel finally swung his feet off the desk where they’d been propped. “Good, as long as it’s handled.”

He stood up, straightened his jacket, and announced, “Alright, I’m heading out.”

Spencer nodded and bowed obsequiously, seeing the influential visitor to the door.

Only after the “big shot” had departed did Spencer finally allow himself to release a long, relieved sigh.

Scarlett remained seated on the edge of her bed, so deeply lost in her thoughts that she barely moved. The sudden ringing of her phone finally broke the heavy silence, startling her back to the present.

She glanced at the screen-it was an incoming call from Vanessa.

Genuine surprise washed over Scarlett.

She had always been the one initiating calls to Vanessa, never daring to hope Vanessa would call her first one day.

Even though she had declared she wouldn’t interfere in Vanessa’s life anymore, she was still Vanessa’s mother. She couldn’t ignore the call.

Once she answered, Vanessa’s small voice came through. “Mom, what are you doing?”

Scarlett kept her tone deliberately cool. “Nothing much, just about to go to bed.”

But just then, her bedroom door creaked open from the outside.

Scarlett looked over and saw Clara entering, carefully carrying a small basin filled with water.

“Auntie, are you on the phone?” Clara asked, her voice hushed. “Am I disturbing you?”

Clara was wobbling slightly under the basin’s weight. Worried she might spill it, Scarlett quickly rose to take it from her. “I thought you were already asleep. What brings you to my room so late?”

Clara set down a small stool, settled onto it, and then looked up at Scarlett with earnest eyes. “Auntie, Nolan said your foot is swollen. Whenever my feet used to swell, Mom would always soak them for me. It made them feel much better, and the pain would go away. I thought I could do the same for you, so your foot won’t hurt anymore.”

Tears welled up instantly in Scarlett’s eyes, her heart overflowing with touched emotion. “You’re such a thoughtful, sweet child, Clara. You’re always so concerned about me.”

In her hurry to take the basin, Scarlett had left her phone lying on the bed.

Now, completely absorbed in Clara’s heartfelt gesture and overwhelmed by the little girl’s kindness, Scarlett entirely forgot she was still on the call with Vanessa.

Clara bent forward, gently guiding Scarlett’s injured foot into the warm water. “Auntie, is the temperature okay? Not too hot?”

Scarlett’s vision blurred with unshed tears, her voice thick with emotion. “No… it’s perfect.”

Clara looked up, a bright grin spreading across her face. “Auntie, why are you crying?”
