Scarlett's heart gave a little jump. She noticed Damian's hair was dusted with snow, so without thinking, she reached out and gently brushed the flakes from the top of his head. "It's freezing out. Why didn't you dress warmer?"
From what she recalled, Damian always went for wool coats and trench coats—stylish, sure, but not nearly as cozy as a proper winter parka.
Damian dipped his head lower, making it easier for her to sweep the snow away.
He was actually pretty particular about his personal space and usually didn't like people touching him.
But with Scarlett, none of that seemed to matter.
Hearing the concern in her voice, he smiled to himself. "If I want you to remember me, I've gotta keep looking sharp, don't I?"
As he finished speaking, he lifted his head, his cheek grazing lightly against her palm.
Scarlett drew her hand back quickly when he looked up, shooting him a slight frown. Her pulse had picked up again thanks to his remark.
A few moments later, she met his eyes seriously and suggested, "Let's go get some baked sweet potatoes."
Changing the subject was her go-to move whenever she wanted him to drop that kind of talk.
But truth be told, Scarlett really was craving one.
The rich, caramel-like smell of baking sweet potatoes hung in the air all along the street.
When it came to Scarlett, Damian never knew how to say no.
He wheeled her over to a sidewalk vendor and bought two.
After paying, he picked up a spoon and offered her the first bite. Scarlett shook her head. "I can handle it."
Damian held firm. "Let me."
He scooped a small, steaming portion onto the spoon and lifted it toward her lips.
After a brief pause, she parted her lips and accepted it.
Watching her eat, Damian then used the same spoon—the one that had just touched her mouth—to take a bite for himself.
After swallowing, he scooped another portion and held it out to her again.
This time, Scarlett hesitated once more. She glanced down at the spoon, emotions swirling inside her.
Damian knew exactly what was holding her back, but he didn't pull the spoon away. He wanted to see what she'd do.
Just as the sweet potato on the spoon was beginning to cool, Damian started to think she really didn't want any more.
He was about to draw back when Scarlett suddenly leaned in and took the bite.
It was the same spoon he had just used.
Which meant, in a way, they'd practically shared an indirect kiss.
What thrilled Damian even more was that Scarlett was slowly letting her guard down around him.
He got so caught up in the moment that he froze, spoon still in hand.
