After plugging her phone in to charge, she powered it back on right away.
Checking the call log from the previous night, Scarlett saw that she and Damian had been on the phone for a full seven hours.
She opened Messages and found texts from Damian. "You looked so peaceful while you were asleep. It made me really want to hold you. Do you miss me?
"I miss you so much, baby.
"Once we're married, let's never spend a day apart, okay?"
Reading those sweet words, Scarlett's heart felt like it was overflowing with warmth—a cozy, honey-like glow spreading through her.
She stared at his messages for a long while before finally typing back. "The court date is in two days... Will you come with me?"
She hit send, but Damian didn't reply for the rest of the day.
Hours passed, and still no response.
Scarlett began to wonder if he didn't want to go to court with her after all.
That familiar, uneasy feeling of overthinking started creeping in—the same kind she used to have back when she was with Vincent.
Am I really falling for Damian?
She hated how easily her mind spiraled, but she couldn't seem to stop it.
Fortunately, Claire called that afternoon. "Scarlett, don't forget—you're coming with me to the gala tonight."
"Okay, I remember," Scarlett replied.
"Should I send a makeup artist over?" Claire offered.
"No need," Scarlett said. "Violet's here. She can help me get ready."
Claire chuckled. "Well, thank her for me, will you?"
"Of course," Scarlett answered before hanging up.
She then called for Violet, who was downstairs. Hearing that Scarlett had a gala to attend, Violet came up to help her prepare.
She pulled out more than a dozen dresses, having Scarlett try each one on.
In the end, Violet settled on a light pink fitted gown.
Scarlett hesitated, looking at the dress. "Violet, I still can't wear heels right now... won't this look a little... off?"
Violet understood instantly. "Oh, stop overthinking. If it looks good, it looks good. Even in a wheelchair, you'll be the most gorgeous person there."
She laid the dress across Scarlett's lap. "You're wearing this one."
Scarlett held the gown and didn't argue further.
