Hearing that, Scarlett finally let herself relax.
A few seconds later, she asked, surprised, "You're done already?"
Damian sat down beside her, leaning into her shoulder. "Missed you too much," he said. "Wrapped things up fast so I could come straight over."
His smooth talk always came out of nowhere.
Scarlett glanced up at him. Noticing how pale he looked, she grew concerned. "How's your injury holding up?"
Damian rested his chin on her shoulder and put on a weary tone. "Could be better," he mumbled.
Scarlett shifted toward him at once. "Let me take a look."
"Okay," Damian agreed without missing a beat.
He sat up briefly before easing himself down onto the couch. Once he was lying back, Scarlett turned to examine him. Seeing fresh red stains seeping through his shirt, she said, "Let me change your bandages."
"Sure," he replied right away.
Scarlett stood up carefully, favoring her injured leg as she went to fetch the first aid kit.
When she returned and began laying out the supplies, she noticed Damian's shirt was still fully buttoned. She leaned in and started undoing the buttons, one by one.
The sudden closeness caught Damian off guard. His body went tense, warmth rushing through him as if he might overheat any second.
As the shirt fell open, Damian's torso was fully exposed in front of her.
At first he stayed rigid, nervous under her gaze, but Scarlett worked with practiced ease, carefully unwrapping the old bandages.
Halfway through, he began to relax.
He watched her, head bent in concentration, a loose strand of hair resting against her cheek. Something about her focused expression made a slow smile spread across his face.
After a quiet moment, he spoke up, "You like it?"
The question came out of nowhere. Scarlett glanced over, confused. "Like what?"
Damian held her gaze. "My body," he said, utterly serious, without a hint of his usual teasing.
Scarlett stared back and scolded lightly, "Damian, don't be ridiculous."
He winced deliberately. "Hurts."
Scarlett paused, concerned. "What hurts? Show me."
As she leaned closer, Damian let a smirk curl his lips. "My heart," he said softly.
Scarlett lifted her hand as if to swat him, but seeing his injuries, she held back—only giving his chest the gentlest tap.
