Hearing that, Vincent let out a visible sigh of relief.
Once the doctor had left, he turned to Lily, his expression growing serious. "What exactly happened, Lily? How did she fall?"
Lily bowed her head nervously. "Mr. Stewart, she... she climbed out the window and fell on her own."
At the mention of climbing out the window, Vincent suddenly remembered he'd grounded Vanessa earlier.
His eyes drifted toward Sabrina, and his voice turned sharp, almost accusing. "What did you say to her this time?"
Sabrina met his gaze, her face pale with exhaustion. "Vincent, I didn't say anything to her."
Just then, a soft voice called from inside the treatment room, "Daddy..."
Vincent held Sabrina's eyes a moment longer before pushing the door open and stepping inside.
Vanessa lay on the narrow hospital bed, her eyes glistening with tears as she looked up at him. "Daddy, please don't blame Sabrina. I wanted to see her, so I climbed out. She didn't know anything about it."
Vincent's voice was low. "You wanted to see her that badly?"
"Yes," Vanessa answered without hesitation. "I really did."
Vincent's expression darkened. "And what about your mother? When she was hurt before, you didn't go to see her then, did you?"
Vanessa shot back, "But you didn't go either, Daddy."
Vincent was briefly at a loss for words. "You—"
Before he could continue, Vanessa's small hand reached out and clasped his. She looked at him earnestly, tears still welling in her eyes. "Daddy, can we... not have Mommy anymore?"
Vincent immediately pulled his hand away, his face stern. "Vanessa, do you realize what you're saying?"
"I know exactly what I'm saying," Vanessa insisted. "I just want Sabrina to be my mom."
In the next instant, Vincent stood up abruptly. "That's enough."
His harsh tone startled Vanessa, and she broke into real sobs. "Daddy, you've never yelled at me like this before... Did Mommy say something to you again?"
Vincent didn't want to argue or scold her further. He fought to keep his anger in check. "Lily will stay with you. I'm going home."
If he stayed any longer, he was afraid he might lose his temper completely.
With that, he turned and walked out of the treatment room.
Behind him, Vanessa cried out tearfully, "Daddy...!"
But Vincent didn't look back. He strode straight into the hallway.
Sabrina rose from the bench the moment she saw him, her eyes full of worry. "Vincent, is Vanessa... is she all right?"
Vincent studied her for several seconds before saying quietly, "Come back with me."
